Love Like Fire is the main job that links the first and second acts of the story. After Dexter DeShawn shoots V at the end of The Heist, the Relic's nanites repair V's brain, and V relives the memories stored on the chip. For the first time, V plays as Johnny Silverhand, on the night he led the attack on the old Arasaka Towers.

Story

A Borrowed Memory

The journal opens with a thought about memory. Often people's stories take the place of their own memories. Someone tells a tale with a beginning, a middle and an end, and soon the listener believes they were there and did it all. Who a person is rests on the past, and the past rests on lies. Johnny's attack on the towers happened some fifty years before V's story. Now it has become V's memory.

The Hammer

Johnny arrives late at the Hammer, a rock club where his band Samurai is due to play. Kerry Eurodyne has already started the set without him. The bouncer shoves Johnny aside, but he pushes his way onto the stage, grabs the microphone and tells the crowd he is saying goodbye.

Outside, Kerry tries to talk him out of the plan he knows will get him killed. Johnny brushes him off. Depending on the answer chosen, Johnny either tells Kerry to stop living in his shadow and build his own career, or simply insults him.

The Towers

Johnny meets Rogue Amendiares, and the two board a helicopter bound for the Arasaka Towers along with the netrunner Spider Murphy and a gunner named Shaitan. On the roof, Shaitan opens fire on the guards and is shot down, and Johnny takes over the gun and clears the rooftop. The cargo turns out to be a small nuclear bomb, meant to be planted inside the building.

Johnny, Rogue and Spider fight their way down through the tower to a lift. Johnny arms the bomb, sends the lift down and shoots its mechanism. Rogue wants to head straight back to the helicopter, but Johnny has a second goal. He wants to upload a virus into Arasaka's systems to free his former girlfriend, the netrunner Alt Cunningham. Rogue gives him a few minutes to do it and get back.

Adam Smasher

Johnny fights through a garden floor to reach the network, and Spider guides him through the upload. On his way out, Adam Smasher and his team ambush him. Johnny's memory breaks up here. The next thing he knows, he has reached the roof, where the helicopter is already lifting off. Rogue grabs him for a moment, but an explosion knocks him away and he is left behind. Smasher finds him and shoots him.

Soulkiller

The memory jumps to an interrogation room, where Arasaka agents question the dying Johnny. Saburo Arasaka arrives and, after a short exchange, orders Johnny to be put through Soulkiller, the program that copies a mind onto a chip. The journal closes with the plain facts: Johnny Silverhand attacked Arasaka Tower, and decades later those events became the memories of a merc called V. The story continues in Playing for Time.

Choices

Johnny's parting words to Kerry can be kind or cruel. He can tell Kerry to make his own name instead of living in Johnny's shadow, or he can insult him. The answers in the interrogation change some lines but not the ending of the memory. The rest of the job is linear.

Tips

Johnny's own pistol, the Malorian Arms 3516, is the weapon used through most of the fight. It is very powerful, so the fights in the tower are quick. V can get the same pistol later in the story.
