Adam Smasher is a full-body cyborg who serves Arasaka as its most feared enforcer. After a total conversion, very little of the man is left, and his humanity was always in doubt. He deals with Arasaka's dirty work in his own brutal way. Half a century before the game, he killed Johnny Silverhand during the attack on Arasaka Tower. If he learns that Johnny is back, he will want to finish the job.
Biography
The Merc
Smasher grew up in the streets of New York and ran with a gang there until the army wiped it out. He then served in the Marines and learned to fight, and afterwards he worked as a merc who took the dirtiest jobs on offer. On one job for Arasaka he was blown to pieces by a rocket. The corporation gave him a choice: die, or become a full cyborg. He chose the machine body and called it the best decision he ever made.
From then on Smasher believed that metal was better than meat. He hunted the corporation's enemies and anyone who crossed him, and he saw the legendary solo Morgan Blackhand as his great rival. During the war between Arasaka and Militech, he led strike teams that killed not only enemy soldiers but their families too.
Arasaka Tower
When Militech forces stormed Arasaka Tower, Smasher and his squads ambushed Johnny Silverhand's team in the Soulkiller labs. Johnny broke cover and fired at him to buy time for the others, and Smasher cut him down with a shotgun. Smasher survived the bomb that destroyed the tower and is said to have been ordered to dispose of Johnny's body. He then dropped out of sight for many years.
Night City
By the time of the game, Smasher is head of security at Arasaka and the personal bodyguard of Yorinobu Arasaka. He is at Konpeki Plaza on the night of the heist and helps hunt the thieves. He is also the one who takes Hanako away after Takemura kidnaps her. In Chippin' In, V and Johnny learn more about how Johnny died at his hands.

Personality
Smasher has no empathy for anyone, his fellow employees included. He serves Arasaka because the corporation keeps him alive, and he repays it by killing its enemies. He enjoys violence and looks down on anyone made of flesh. He believes humanity is obsolete and that bodies and even minds will one day be replaced by machines.
Relationships
Johnny Silverhand is the man he killed and his oldest enemy. Morgan Blackhand is the rival he could never provoke into a duel. Yorinobu Arasaka is the master he guards. Rogue and Panam are among those who face him in the final assault, depending on the ending.
Jobs
Smasher is at Konpeki Plaza in The Heist. Love Like Fire, the flashback that follows it, shows him killing Johnny during the raid on Arasaka Tower. His name comes up again in Chippin' In, when the truth about Johnny's death comes out. The final fight against him happens in Totalimmortal, Belly of the Beast or Knockin' on Heaven's Door, depending on the ending.

Endings
Smasher waits on the upper floors of Arasaka Tower in every ending that takes V or Johnny there. In the Arasaka ending he fights V and Takemura on their way to Yorinobu. In Johnny's ending he kills Rogue, and Johnny destroys him in revenge. In the Aldecaldos ending and the solo assault, V faces him alone or with the nomads' help. Whatever the path, defeating him is the last great battle of the story.
Notes
Smasher is the toughest boss of the base game, and the fight against him takes place on the upper floors of Arasaka Tower.
