Shot by Both Sides is a Phantom Liberty side job in which Mr. Hands sends V to help Bree Whitney, a frightened journalist investigating a secret Militech site under Dogtown. V collects a Militech access card from her apartment, then follows her into Cynosure Site D, where a Militech agent catches up with them. V must decide whose side to take.

Story

A Private Eye

The journal is amused: a terrified journalist, a top secret investigation, corporate dirt and anonymous threats. Johnny asks whether V has given up mercenary work to become Night City's top private eye.

Mr. Hands sends V to Bree Whitney's apartment to find a Militech card hidden in a safe box under a bamboo plant. The plant is in the bedroom, by the computer. As V leaves, a neighbour stops V at the door, worried about Bree. Nobody has seen her for a while, and strange people have been hanging around the building.

Cynosure Site D

Mr. Hands then sends V to meet Bree below the Kress Street apartment building, in the tunnels under Dogtown. V tracks her by her footprints to a cave, where she points a gun at V before they talk. V gives her the card, and she leads the way into Cynosure Site D, a hidden Militech laboratory.

The card does not open one of the doors, so they take another way. Behind each door Bree opens wait cameras, turrets and laser mines. In a control room, Bree finds the video logs of Evan McRay, recorded at the site about a decade earlier. As they are about to leave, Dante Caruso, a Militech agent, confronts them.

Bree or Dante

V must choose a side. If Dante dies, Bree thanks V and leaves her pistol behind, and Mr. Hands pays V for the job. A day later, he calls again: Bree was working with NetWatch and sold them the data for her own gain. Days later, a NetWatch hit squad attacks V in the street, and by then it has also killed Lisa Smith, one of the last scientists from the lab.

If Bree dies, Dante shares a shard from her body. It shows she was working for NetWatch for her own profit, and helped arrange the killing of Caesar Mijares, another scientist from the lab. Dante pays V.

Shot by Both Sides Walkthrough

The Apartment

  1. Read Mr. Hands's message and go to Bree's apartment.
  2. Take the lift to her floor and open the door, by force or with Technical Ability.
  3. Find the bamboo plant in the bedroom by the computer, scan it and take the access card.
  4. Write to Mr. Hands.
  5. Talk to the stranger at the door if desired.

The Tunnels

  1. Go to the meeting point below the Kress Street apartment building.
  2. Take the lift to the lower level.
  3. Find Bree: scan her footprints, cross the cave like area, drop down and crouch through the small gap.
  4. Talk to Bree, give her the card and follow her.

The Laboratory

  1. Scan each room for threats and disarm the cameras and laser mines before they spot V. If a camera sees V, two turrets come out.
  2. In the second room, open the locked room that can shut down the security system.
  3. Read the shards and emails about the site's last days if desired.
  4. Reach the control room and watch the three videos with Bree.

The Ending

  1. Talk to Bree and Dante.
  2. Side with Bree and kill Dante, or let Bree die.
  3. Pick up the weapons and talk to whoever is left.
  4. Leave the laboratory and call Mr. Hands.

Choices

Siding with Bree

Killing Dante gets his revolver and Bree's pistol, and Mr. Hands pays for the job. The truth about Bree comes later, along with a NetWatch hit squad.

Siding with Dante

If Bree dies, Dante pays V and shares her shard.

Keeping the Data

If Bree dies, V can also kill Dante before he takes the data from her body. V then picks up the Cynosure Site D database and both weapons. Mr. Hands is displeased at first, but satisfied when V mentions the database, and V can send it to him through a drop point.

Rewards

Completing Shot by Both Sides pays €$ 5,000, 1,832 experience and 167 Street Cred. It also rewards Riskit (depending on choices), Ol' Reliable (depending on choices) and Database: Cynosure Site D (depending on choices).

Bree's Iconic power pistol Riskit can be picked up. If Dante is killed, his Iconic revolver Ol' Reliable can be looted. Mr. Hands or Dante pays V.
