Commander Niall is a great boss in Elden Ring.

Commander Niall is the old veteran who still holds Castle Sol on the Mountaintops of the Giants. He fights beside the spirits of two Banished Knights, then wades in himself with a halberd, frost winds and a lightning-charged prosthetic leg. Beyond his arena lies half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion. That medallion opens the way to the Consecrated Snowfield.

Lore

Niall is a veteran armored commander who walks on a metal prosthetic leg. He swings a halberd that stirs up freezing winds and charges his false leg with lightning.

Niall, veteran of Castle Sol, gave up his leg in exchange for the lives of defeated knights held prisoner. He went on to lead those men as an army of no nation.

Now the lone survivor, he commands the spirits of his fallen knights in defense of a master long since passed.

Phases

Phase 1: Two Banished Knight spirits, one with dual greatswords and one with sword and shield, do most of the fighting while Niall hangs back and buffs them.
Phase 2: Once both knights fall or Niall drops to half health, the spirits vanish and he attacks with frost whirlwinds and lightning leg slams.

Attacks

Frost Whirlwind: he swings his halberd to raise a storm of freezing wind around himself; back away from the swirl.
Lightning Stomp and Leap: he charges his prosthetic leg with lightning and leaps in for a slam with a lightning shockwave; jump the shockwave or roll at the last moment.
Dash Uppercut: a halberd whirl and a quick dash into an uppercut; roll aside as he dashes.
Charged Whirlwind: he draws in frost, whirls the halberd into an expanding storm, then dashes in with an uppercut; dodge the uppercut and punish while he kneels exhausted.
Kick: a lightning kick, often in answer to thrown knives; roll through it.
Banished Knight attacks: the spirits swing heavy greatswords that build frostbite; separate them and keep moving.

Tactics

Kill the more aggressive dual greatsword knight first.
Turn the knights against Niall with Bewitching Branches.
Backstab one knight at the start to thin them out fast.
Summon a sturdy Spirit Ash after the first knight falls.
Wear lightning protection and carry Thawfrost Boluses for frostbite.
Punish the long recovery after his Charged Whirlwind, the biggest opening of the fight.
