The Iron Tower Shield is not about parrying. It is a slab of Swamp iron wide enough to stand behind while the blows simply land, and it has 52 block armour.

How to Craft

Craft it at a level 2 forge from:

Name Image Biome Crafting Station Spawn ID
Finewood Finewood Meadows - spawn FineWood
Iron Iron Swamp Smelter spawn Iron

When to Use It

This is early game gear. Iron comes from Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, so it opens up once The Elder is down.

Upgrades

You can upgrade it 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station built one step higher than the last. Every other figure on this page is for quality 1, so this table shows where your own copy sits:

Quality Crafting Station Block armor Durability Resources
1 Forge (Level 2) 52 200
2 Forge (Level 3) 58 250
3 Forge (Level 4) 64 300
4 Forge (Level 5) - -

Properties

With 52 armour and 100 block force, it gives the most solid block in the iron tier. It is the shield to take into a Sunken Crypt, where something is always swinging at you from behind.

A tower shield cannot parry. It slows your movement by 10% while drawn and raises the cost of a dodge roll by the same 10%, and in exchange it blocks harder than anything else in its tier. What you give up is the parry, which staggers the attacker so it takes double damage.

The Serpent Scale Shield is the better buy if you can get it. It has more block power, costs less iron, carries a smaller movement penalty and adds pierce resistance on top. All it asks is that you hunt a Serpent.

Notes

The design and color are picked with the style button at the crafting station, and they cannot be changed once the shield is made.
