The whole iron tier starts as rusted junk. Scrap Iron comes out of the muddy piles on the floor of a Sunken Crypt in the Swamp, and it only becomes useful once you smelt it.
How to Get It
Muddy scrap piles are where most of it comes from, and any pickaxe breaks them, so the Antler Pickaxe you earn from Eikthyr is already enough. The crypts are locked, though, and the Swamp Key that opens them drops from The Elder, so that fight is the real gate rather than the tool. Crypt chests and Oozers add a little more, and much later you can break the ancient swords and armour standing in Mistlands rubble for it as well. All of it is portal-locked, so every load goes home by ship or cart.
Notes
- Like other metals, it can only be teleported through a Portal Stone.
- Scrap Iron ore is 2 units lighter than smelted Iron.
- Smelting it into Iron burns Coal. The Smelter uses one coal every 15 seconds and takes 30 seconds a bar, so every bar costs two coal. It holds 20 coal and 10 ore at a time, and it stops if the smoke above it has nowhere to go.
Scrap Iron Crafting Recipes
Almost every recipe wants Scrap Iron smelted into Iron first. The recipe below is the exception and takes it straight out of the mud.
