The Devil by the Well is a Noonwraith, one of the Specters. It haunts the well of the Abandoned Village in White Orchard. It is a unique monster, met in the first hours of the game as a witcher contract.
Lore
Odolan of White Orchard describes the wraith in plain words. It wears a dirty dress of rags, and its skin is flaking off its bones. It howls as if it were suffering.
The people of White Orchard had already lived through more than their share of trouble. Passing armies had trampled their spring planting. A Griffin had started carrying off their livestock. On top of all that, a noonwraith now haunted a nearby well. No wonder the villagers called this last evil a devil.
The wraith was once a young woman named Claer. She died a horrible death, and her strong emotions turned her into this terrible monster. Something still bound her to the place. To send her away for good, the witcher first had to learn her secret.
Witchers rarely feel sorry for the monsters they kill. They hate the cruel ones and are disgusted by the foul ones. This noonwraith was different. The witcher pitied her. Thoughts of the young woman haunted the witcher for a long time.
Behaviour
The wraith circles the old well in the ruined village and guards it with jealous fury. Burn marks scar the grass around the well, and a burned, dried body lies nearby. The wraith leaves a careful visitor alone. Walking too close to it starts a fight on the spot.
Weaknesses
Coat the silver sword with Specter Oil. Yrden is the key to this fight. The trap forces the wraith into solid form, so the sword can hit it. Inside the trap it also slows down and takes extra damage. Moon Dust bombs work against it as well.
The wraith can blind its victim. It also makes mirror images of itself, which come in from several sides. These copies slowly drain life while the real wraith stays out of reach. The copies break quickly, so cut them down first. Then cast Yrden again and go back to the wraith itself.

Contracts and Quests
| Quest | Quest Giver | Location | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contract: Devil by the Well | Odolan | White Orchard | Crowns or Amethyst |
The wraith is the target of Contract: Devil by the Well in White Orchard. The contract is on the village notice board. Odolan, a worried father, wrote it. A devil guards the well in the ruined village, and Odolan wants it driven away. The reward can be haggled up before the job starts.
The hunt is a short murder mystery. A diary in an eastern hut and a trail of drag marks lead back to the well. A woman's body hangs from the well's rope. Her bracelet lies at the bottom of the well, and its inscription tells whose it was. Burning her bones together with the bracelet breaks the tie that holds the ghost to the village. The wraith then appears for the final fight.
Odolan pays on return. Refusing the coin earns an Amethyst instead. Tomira, the herbalist near White Orchard, knew about Claer. A talk with her after the contract reveals what happened in the village and adds a small reward.
