The Noonwraith is one of the Specters. It is the spirit of a young woman who died a violent death just before her wedding. Noonwraiths haunt farm fields, and the first one turns up in White Orchard at the very start of the game.

Lore

Vlad Reymond wrote a book called Peasants and Their Customs. In it he explains why peasants stop working at midday. Most people think it is to get out of the sun. In truth, they do it to avoid noonwraiths.

On searing summer days, when the sun is at its highest, wraiths sometimes appear in the fields. They look like sun-scorched women in long white robes. These are noonwraiths. Driven mad with pain and anger, they wander the fields in search of unfaithful lovers or treacherous rivals. They kill anyone who does not get out of their way in time.

An object of strong emotional meaning often holds a noonwraith in this world. So a wedding ring or a torn veil lying in the middle of a field is best left alone. Anyone who finds one should back away as quickly as possible.

Behaviour

Noonwraiths only haunt the countryside, and they usually stay near the place where they died. They prey on peasants at work in the fields and on children playing nearby. Contrary to common belief, a noonwraith can also be met at night. It is much weaker then than during the day.

Weaknesses

Coat the silver sword with Specter Oil. A noonwraith does not bleed, and most Signs have little effect on it. Aard and Igni do almost nothing. Yrden is the exception.

A noonwraith can turn immaterial, and then it is very hard to wound. Trap it with Yrden or hit it with a Moon Dust bomb. Either one forces it back into solid form. Then attack fast.

It creates mirror images of itself. They circle the victim in a twisted kind of dance. This ritual drains the victim's life and adds to the wraith's own strength, so destroy the images quickly. It can also kick up clouds of dust that blind and confuse for a short time.

Contracts and Quests

Quest Quest Giver Location Reward
Contract: Devil by the Well Notice board Abandoned Village, White Orchard Crowns or Amethyst
Contract: The White Lady Notice board Drahim Castle, Novigrad Noonwraith Trophy

Named noonwraiths are hunted in witcher contracts. The Devil by the Well haunts a well in an abandoned village in White Orchard, in Contract: Devil by the Well. The locals had already lost their spring planting to passing armies and their livestock to a griffin. The noonwraith was the last straw, and they called it a devil. The witcher had to learn the secret of the young woman behind it before the fight.

The White Lady haunts the fields outside Novigrad and is the target of Contract: The White Lady.
