Kaer Morhen is an old keep in the Blue Mountains of Hertch, in the kingdom of Kaedwen. Witchers of the School of the Wolf once trained here. The name means "Keep of the Sea of Yore". It points to an ancient sea that once covered the area. Fossils of sea creatures are still set in the stones of the keep.

History

Years ago a huge pogrom swept over Kaer Morhen. A mob of fanatics stormed the keep and murdered the people inside. The Trials that turned boys into witchers are no longer held here. Only a handful of witchers still spend the winter at the keep. Then they set out again on the Path.

Kaer Morhen is the stage for some of the biggest moments of the main story. In the main quest Ugly Baby, Geralt brings the cursed Uma to the keep. With Yennefer's help, he lifts the curse. Uma turns out to be the elven sage Avallac'h.

Later, Ciri brings Geralt home to Kaer Morhen with the Wild Hunt close behind. Their friends gather to defend her. The Hunt attacks the keep in the main quest The Battle of Kaer Morhen. Vesemir dies at the hand of Imlerith. Ciri then unleashes her power in a wild blast that drives the Hunt away. The survivors hold a funeral for Vesemir in the main quest Blood on the Battlefield.
