Cemetery Shade is a dungeon boss in Elden Ring.

The Cemetery Shade is a shadowy, insect-ridden grave keeper that flits around its chamber with two curved blades. Three of them guard the ends of the Tombsward, Black Knife and Caelid catacombs. Each one has little health but strikes in fast flurries that cause bleeding. They also spit a web that pins their prey in place for a deadly grab.

Lore

The shade is a lanky, long-necked figure of shadow with a hollow torso and large glowing eyes. A creature like a spider or a crab clings to the top of its head. It fights with a pair of curved mantis blades.

Shades are grave keepers overrun by insects. They haunt the catacombs where the dead were laid to rest.

Weaknesses

Weak To Holy
Resists Pierce
Immune Poison, Scarlet Rot, Hemorrhage, Frostbite, Sleep, Madness

Attacks

  • Teleport: it vanishes and reappears elsewhere, often close by; roll away or raise a guard as it appears.
  • Spit Trap: it blows a bubble of web above its head and shoots it, trapping its target; roll once the bubble grows larger than its head.
  • Spider Grab: after a trap lands, its head glows and it grabs with spider legs; avoid the trap to avoid the grab.
  • Dual Slash and One-Two Slash: wide slashes with both blades; block and guard counter or roll back.
  • Pincer Attack: it spreads its blades and snaps them shut from both sides; roll forward instead of blocking.
  • Spinning Swings: one slash, a pause, then four fast slashes while moving forward; run away during the pause.
  • Furious Slashing: a long chain of slashes ending in an overhead slam; run away and punish the slam.

Tactics

  1. Carry Stanching Boluses, since its blades cause bleeding even through a shield.
  2. Keep the shade in view at all times to dodge the web spit.
  3. Pop an Opaline Bubbletear before entering so there is time to summon Spirit Ashes.
  4. Trade blows aggressively, since its health is very low.
  5. Use a shield that blocks all physical damage and guard counter to break its stance.
  6. Punish the Overhead Slam, which leaves it most exposed.
  7. Use quick spells or a greatbow; a greatbow hit knocks it down right after a teleport.
