In the Ashlands the arrows usually arrive before you see anything, and the Charred Marksman is what sent them. It is the ranged half of the burnt army holding the southern continent: a thin, blackened archer that hangs at the back and keeps shooting while warriors and twitchers close the distance for it. With only 200 health it is one of the flimsiest mobs in the biome, yet it will still be the reason your health bar is half empty when the real fight starts.
Behaviour
It is aggressive on sight, never sleeps and never willingly closes the distance, holding its ground at the back of whatever group it spawned with. Inside twenty metres it fires aimed shots every two seconds for 90 pierce damage. The arrows fly fast and with a tight spread, so standing in the open is simply a mistake. Beyond that, out to a full hundred metres, it angles twenty-five degrees skyward and fires a volley of ten arrows every four seconds, each dealing 60 pierce. Those come down as a shower rather than a line, so if you stand still while it arcs, you take four hits at once. It needs line of sight, so an ash ridge, a lava spur or a standing rock cuts the barrage off entirely while you reposition. It does not call others and does not flee. It just keeps shooting until something reaches it.
Where to Find It
It is common in the middle of the Ashlands. Up to three roam in the open during the day, and at night there is no cap at all, though those night spawns despawn at dawn. It also spawns from Ashlands structures: uncommonly from a Monument of Torment and from the Effigy of Malice when a player wanders close. The elite monuments produce only two-star versions. Most of its natural spawns can roll stars, doubling and tripling both its health and the damage of every arrow. Once Fader is dead it can also spawn at night, very rarely and without stars, anywhere in the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains or Plains, despawning at dawn. It also appears in numbers during the "The undead army marches" event.

Strengths and Weaknesses
The whole fight is about closing the gap, because once you reach it, its 200 health falls to almost anything you own. Shooting back is the trap: it shrugs off arrows and shrugs off fire even harder, so a flame-gemmed Flametal weapon or a quiver of Fire Arrows is close to wasted effort. Spirit hurts it most. Failing that, blunt, slash, frost and lightning all land at full value, so a Nidhögg or a set of Berserkir Axes will do the work the moment you are in range. Move between cover rather than sprinting straight at it, and raise a shield when you hear the volley go up: a blocked arrow costs stamina, while an unblocked one costs a third of your bar. In a mixed group, deal with whatever is already swinging at you, then run the archer down at once, because its chip damage, not any single big hit, is what loses Ashlands fights. Full Mistlands gear is the minimum, and Ashlands-tier armour with a fire resistance mead makes roaming the open ash routine.
- It takes extra damage from Spirit.
- It shrugs off Pierce.
- It is barely troubled by Fire.
- It ignores Poison.
Drops
Charred Bone is the drop that makes the sprint worth it, with a one-in-twenty chance at the trophy on top.

Level Variants
A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred Charred Marksman is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.
