Fader is the seventh of the Forsaken, and the whole Ashlands has been warming you up for this boss fight. He is a charred, skeletal dragon glowing green through the gaps in his own ribs, and you fight him in a sunken coliseum ringed by lava. His twenty five thousand health is only half the problem. The other half is the arena floor, which is a weapon in its own right. If you have learned to read every other boss by watching the boss, you will die here, reading the ground far too late.

Behaviour

Fader never leaves his arena, and he never needs to. Up close he has a short list of attacks. A lunging bite sweeps a ten metre arc, two claw swipes cover most of the ground in front of him, and every twenty seconds a spin clears everything within eight and a half metres of his body. All of these deal heavy pierce damage, with chop and pickaxe values high enough to flatten whatever you built to hide behind. The ranged attacks are what actually kill people. Flamebreath draws a seventeen metre line of fire that keeps burning where it lands. Meteors fall in tens and leave pools that apply Burning. A wall of fire surrounds you with twelve separate rings. The fissure attack comes faster as his health drops: it raises twelve to sixteen circles of flame that erupt into spikes and then settle into standing pools. The fissure can kill you outright, even through a full Flametal set with fire resistance already running. Somewhere between a third and half health he adds a roar that flings eight orbs across the arena. Each orb hatches a Charred Warrior or Charred Marksman, and he keeps up to seven of each alive at a time. He does not flee, barely staggers, and has no star variants.

Where to Find It

Fader sleeps in a coliseum-like arena in the Ashlands, the crescent of burning land at the southern edge of the world. The boiling water there destroys wooden hulls, so you can only get there by Drakkar, after The Queen is dead. To find the arena, read a Vegvisir in the central tower of a Charred Fortress. To wake him, hang three bells around the structure and ring them. Each bell takes three Bell Fragments, and fragments only come out of Charred Fortresses, so you have to clear some of the hardest garrisons in the game before you can summon him. The arena is a fixed structure that stays in one place, and you can summon him again whenever you can pay the fragments. Killing him changes the world for good. Charred Warriors and Marksmen start to spawn at night across several biomes, and the older undead-themed raid events stop altogether.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Very little of the kit you arrived with still works here. He shrugs off pierce and is fully immune to fire and spirit, which rules out most of the Ashlands arsenal at once, so leave the bow and the fire weapons at home. He takes full damage from blunt, slash, frost and lightning. That puts the fight in the hands of Flametal Maces, two-handed slashing weapons and the lightning staffs, with frost as a solid second option if you came up through the Mountain. You can block his melee in full Flametal behind a tower shield. Parrying the spin wastes stamina, though, and no shield in the game helps against a floor full of fire pools. Movement is your defence. Stay off ground he has already lit, break line of sight against flamebreath, and sprint clear of the fissure rings the moment they rise instead of trying to tank them. Treat the meteor phase as free time to reposition. Fire Resistance Barley Wine is close to mandatory, and even with it you are not safe. When the roar brings in adds, kill the marksmen first, because their arrows land while you are busy dodging the arena itself. Bring your best healing food, a full Flametal set and the patience for a long fight.

Drops

The relics go into an Eternal Pyre, but the trophy is the real reward. Once mounted, it grants fire resistance, double adrenaline gain and much less stagger.

Forsaken Power

Hang the Fader trophy on its stone at the Sacrificial Stones and you can call on this power:

  • 50% fire resistance
  • +100% adrenaline gain
  • 50% less stagger

It is made for the Ashlands, where almost everything burns and the big hits knock you off your feet.

The power lasts five minutes. All Forsaken powers share one twenty-minute cooldown, so only one can be active at a time. Anyone within ten metres of you gets it too.

Notes

  • "Fader" is a formal word in Danish and Swedish for "father".
  • This mirrors Moder, whose name is Swedish for "mother".
  • In-game, Fader is often called "the Emerald Flame", and that title is what marks his location on the map. Every other boss is marked on the map by its name.
  • In the lore, those who die to Drake fire are "caught between life and death" and "have flames for flesh and agony in every moment". That is where the Charred come from.
