Frozen Branch is what a Barka leaves behind once it stops moving. The Barka is a walking frozen tree, the Deep North's answer to The Elder, and the branch still carries a trace of the magic that animated it. It weighs half a unit and stacks to 50. It goes into exactly two things, both of them Deep North gear: the cast for the Nord Greatsword and the Spirit Caller staff.
How to Get It
Every Barka drops one branch when it dies, and nothing else in the game drops them. Barka always spawn without stars, so the drop never grows: one kill gives one branch, plus a one in ten chance of the Barka Trophy.
Finding one is the slow part. Barka roam the open Deep North by day and night, but never more than one at a time. They stand dormant until something wakes them: a player within 20 metres, or a player's noise within 50. Walk quietly and you choose when the fight starts.
The fight itself is long. A Barka has 2,200 health and resists blunt, slash, pierce, frost and lightning, and poison and spirit do nothing to it. Fire is its weakness and chop lands in full, so bring a fire weapon or a good axe. Stay out of the ten-to-twenty metre band its slam drive reaches, and never stand behind it, where it does a back slam every three seconds.
Learn its attacks. The heavy swing covers an eight-metre, 90-degree arc for 160 blunt and 100 frost. The whip flurry sweeps 160 degrees out to ten metres. The whip slam comes down in a narrow line and adds 100 pierce. Every attack also hits the creatures around the Barka and deals tier 3 chop and pickaxe damage, so fight it well away from anything you have built.
Notes
Plan your Barka hunts before making the moulds: a single Spirit Caller upgraded to quality 3 takes more Frozen Branches than any other material.
Frozen Branch Crafting Recipes
The Nord Greatsword's cast takes 2 branches in place of the Timberwood most Nord casts use. Its upgrades ask for one and then two more, so a greatsword at quality 3, the most a level 6 Black Forge allows, takes 5 branches. The Spirit Caller takes 8 for its cast, then 4 and 8 to upgrade, 20 in all at quality 3, the most a level 5 Galdr Table allows. If you want both fully upgraded you need 25 branches, which means killing 25 Barka.
