Bloodgold is the metal of the Deep North, and it is made unlike anything else in the game. It does not come from an ore vein or a scrap pile. Every bar starts as Petrified Tissue, which you break with Ember Charges out of a Petrified Gammeltroll, the statue a Gammeltroll leaves where it dies, or out of the petrified arms and legs half-buried in the snow. You then smelt the tissue into Bloodgold in a Blast Furnace.
Almost all of the biome's gear needs it. Every Nord weapon, every Protector piece, the Vanguard chestpiece and trousers, the Bloodgold ammo, both Deep North capes, the two trinkets and the Crown of Valheim take Bloodgold, and upgrading them takes far more than the first craft. A bar weighs 14, the same as Silver, and only 30 fit in a stack, which makes it one of the heaviest metals to carry.
How to Get It
One Petrified Gammeltroll is a whole mine on its own. A full statue has 52 segments, while the loose petrified arms in the snow have 7 and the legs 20. Every segment breaks into two or three items, each one Stone two times in three and Petrified Tissue one time in three. On average a full statue drops about 43 tissue and 87 stone, an arm about 6 tissue and a leg about 17.
Only tier 6 pickaxe damage can break a statue, which in practice means Ember Charges. A Workbench crafts ten of them from two Seal Pelts and one Ember, and each one bursts for 50 pickaxe damage across three metres. A living Gammeltroll's punch carries the same tier.
Every Gammeltroll you kill leaves a new statue, so Petrified Tissue is a renewable resource you can farm.
In the Blast Furnace, each piece of tissue becomes one bar in 30 seconds and burns two Coal. Smelting a whole statue's worth costs about 87 Coal and 22 minutes.
Notes
- Neither the bars nor the tissue can go through a normal portal. A Stone Portal carries both, which is the easiest way to bring a statue's worth home.
- The Bloodgold Battle Idol and Protection Idol give a 65% chance to raise Deep North gear one quality level, even past its last, and destroy it otherwise. They are not crafted from Bloodgold: you find them in the chests of Mörkhalla, abandoned villages, the Deep North's viking graveyards and its shipwrecks.
- Four of the Bloodgold casts are made at a Galdr Table instead of a Black Forge: the Echo Spike and Lightning Strike staves and the Caller robes and trousers.
Bloodgold Crafting Recipes
The numbers add up quickly. A Nord weapon takes 20 Bloodgold for its cast and 30 more to reach quality 3, the highest a level 6 Black Forge allows, for 50 in all. Reforging it into a Frostfire or Thunderblood version costs another 20 and starts the upgrades over. A full Protector set takes 60 for the three casts and 195 at quality 3. The Vanguard set is cheaper at 24 and 60, and the Caller set needs only 12 and 30, because their hoods and headdresses take no metal. Crafting every recipe below once would take 920 bars.
Bloodgold is also a building material. A Smoker, one of the extensions that take the Cauldron to level 7, costs five. The Smith's Aprons take five, the Timberwood Gate four and the Timberwood Drawbridge two, and thirty make a decorative Bloodgold Stack.
