After dark the Swamp produces a thing the size of a cart that looks like several blobs melted together and left out in the sun. An Oozer cannot chase, cannot be surprised and does not hit hard in any ordinary sense, yet it still kills more players than most of the biome. Its one attack is a burst of poison that goes off the instant you step into melee. Worse, killing it does not finish it: the body splits into two more.

Behaviour

Oozers move slowly, rolling and wobbling rather than walking, and you do not so much outmanoeuvre them as simply outwalk them. They have exactly one attack and nothing at range. Come within about three metres and the body stretches, compresses and releases a cloud of poisonous gas eight metres across for 115 poison damage. The cloud hangs in the air afterwards but only ever hits once, so the trigger is the danger, not the lingering gas. It can do this again every four seconds. They are immune to stagger, so nothing you do interrupts the wind-up and you can never knock one off balance. They will not flee, cannot call for others and pay no attention to cover or terrain. On death the body bursts into two Blobs, each carrying the same poison burst on a smaller scale. The moment you land the killing blow is the moment two fresh poison sources appear inside your melee range.

Where to Find It

Oozers are a common night creature in the Swamp. They spawn anywhere in the biome after dark and clear at dawn, so a swamp trip planned around daylight will often miss them entirely. The one exception is a rare fixed spawn point outside some Sunken Crypts that does not despawn, which is how a great many players meet their first one in broad daylight while queueing at a crypt door. Once Bonemass has fallen, the event called A Foul Smell from the Swamp makes them very common and brings two-star versions into play, which is a much worse proposition. Finally, a Blob Bomb, built at a Workbench from a Corked Vial bought from the Bog Witch, conjures one on the spot to fight on your side. That is the only time an Oozer is good news.

Where and When At Once How Often Stars
Anywhere in Swamp during the nighttime, despawn at dawn 1 - No
Rare spawn point in front of Sunken Crypts, doesn't despawn at dawn - One time No
During "A foul smell from the swamp" event after defeating Bonemass 2 Very common No
When a Blob bomb Elite poison is used - - No

Strengths and Weaknesses

The trick is not being near it. Its whole threat lives inside an eight-metre bubble, so anything that lets you fight from further out wins for free, and anything that puts you in melee costs health. If you must go in, drink Poison Resistance Mead first: the burst is comfortably survivable with it and often is not without it. Blunt is the damage to bring, and frost and lightning do the same work, so a club, a Stagbreaker or a Frostner all cut straight through it, while arrows and swords mostly slide off and fire is a waste of a quiver. Forget parrying: an Oozer cannot be staggered, so a perfect block earns you nothing. Plan the kill rather than the fight. Back off a few paces before you land the last hit, so the two blobs appear at range instead of on top of you, then keep moving and take them one at a time. Iron-tier gear and a Poison Resistance Mead make the whole thing routine. Before that, either fight it with something blunt and keep your feet moving, or walk away and come back in daylight.

  • It takes extra damage from Blunt, Frost and Lightning.
  • It shrugs off Slash, Pierce and Fire.
  • It ignores Poison.

Drops

It drops two lots of Ooze for bombs and has a fair chance of dropping Scrap Iron, plus it leaves two blobs you have to deal with before you can pick any of it up.

Notes

  • Oozers have a chance to drop Scrap Iron, so in theory they can get you into Iron equipment before you have a Swamp Key. In practice their fairly uncommon spawn rate, the low drop rate of Scrap Iron and the high metal cost of iron equipment make this a poor way to get Iron.
  • Oozers have no associated trophy.
