The Swamp Key opens nothing at all in the Black Forest, where you win it. The Elder drops it when he is defeated, and it fits the sealed doors of the Sunken Crypts one biome later.
Production
It opens the gate of every Sunken Crypt in the Swamp. It is not used up, so one key opens them all.
How to Get It
Summon The Elder at his rune altar with Ancient Seeds, which you take from Greydwarf nests and Burial Chambers. Then fight him in the open, where fire and a bow serve far better than a blade. The key goes straight into your inventory when he falls and is never used up, so a single fight unlocks every crypt in the world for you. If you die carrying it, you have to fetch it from your gravestone or face the boss again. Without it, the iron in the Swamp stays behind a locked door.
