One log buys you two metres of Roundpole Fence, which makes it the cheapest line you can draw around a camp. You find it in the Defences tab at a single Wood per section. It works by geometry rather than toughness: you can vault it, and most of the things that want to eat you cannot.
How to Build It
Each section costs a single Wood with a Workbench in range, which is about as cheap as building gets. Unusually for timber it shrugs off rain, so a fence line out in the open will not quietly weather away on you. It is thin stuff, though. A Troll or a charging boss goes straight through it, so treat it as a boundary for Boars and Greylings rather than a wall. Sections snap end to end and follow a gentle slope without any terraforming.
