Sooner or later the Black Forest stops sending Greydwarves and sends a Troll instead: seven metres tall with six hundred health, swinging either its fists or an uprooted tree trunk. For most players it is the first enemy you cannot beat just by trading hits with a Bronze Axe, and the first that will flatten a starter hut on its way to you. Kill one and the hide off its back becomes the light armour that carries you through the next two biomes.
Behaviour
A Troll walks rather than charges, but its stride is huge and it wades through shallow water faster than you can swim. It cannot jump or climb, and that is the easiest weakness to exploit. Roughly one in three spawn carrying a log, which changes the fight completely: log-wielders swing vertically for 70 blunt out to nine metres and horizontally for 60 across a ten-metre arc, both every six seconds, so they out-reach every weapon you own. Unarmed Trolls punch for 60 blunt in a close arc and use a ground slam for 70 that hits anyone standing at their legs. Only they throw boulders, for 50 blunt from eight to twenty metres away, an attack they stop using once you are inside that range. A Troll never sleeps and never gives up the chase. If it loses sight of you, it turns on whatever you have built nearby and starts tearing it down, because every attack except the thrown boulder counts as a tier two tool and breaks wood, stone, ore deposits and full-grown oaks alike. Its size works against it in thick woodland, where it gets stuck on trunks and boulders and finds its way around them poorly. It also shares the Forest faction with Greydwarf Shamans, whose healing pollen will heal a Troll in the middle of a fight.
Where to Find It
Trolls live in the Black Forest and are very rare as wandering spawns, capped at one in the world at a time, and star variants only start to spawn once you are more than two thousand metres from the centre of the map. The reliable place to find one is a Troll Cave, a big rock opening ringed with bone piles. Each cave holds either nothing or a single Troll, sometimes standing outside the entrance rather than inside, and those spawn points trigger once and never refill. A Troll can neither enter nor leave its cave, so an emptied cave becomes the safest shelter in the biome and a useful early base. Killing both a Troll and The Elder also unlocks the "The ground is shaking" raid, which sends two Trolls at you in the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp or Plains and lasts eighty seconds. That raid is by far the most reliable way to meet one on purpose.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Bring a bow. Trolls are weak to pierce and resist blunt, so the club you cleared the forest with is the worst weapon in your chest, while Fire Arrows or plain Flinthead Arrows from a Finewood Bow do solid damage. You win the fight with footwork rather than defence: it out-reaches every early weapon, so circle behind it, land two or three hits on its back while the swing animation plays out, and get clear before it turns round. Blocking is a losing game at bronze tier, since one hit staggers or kills you outright, and even a successful parry leaves you standing right where the follow-up lands. Use the terrain instead, because it cannot jump: a two-metre ledge, a raised earthwork or a cluster of tight trees turns the whole fight into target practice. Never fight one near anything you have built, and never fight one with open ground behind you. A full Bronze set with a Huntsman Bow makes it routine; before that it is a chase rather than a duel, and running away is a fair choice.
Drops
The hide is the whole reason to take the fight: a plain Troll drops five Troll Hide and a two-star up to twenty, with a pile of Coins and a coin-flip chance at the Troll Trophy on top.
| Item | Image | Base | 1 Star | 2 Star |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coins | 20-29 | 40-58 | 80-100 | |
| Troll hide | 5 | 10 | 20 | |
| Troll trophy | 50% | 50% | 50% |
Level Variants
A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately when it spawns, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference is more than the numbers: a starred Troll is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.
| Level | Stars | Image | Health | Damage | Drops |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | - | 600 | 100% | x1 | |
| 2 | ⭐ | 1200 | 150% | x2 | |
| 3 | ⭐⭐ | 1800 | 200% | x4 |
Notes
- A 1-star Troll has a pale green tint, and a 2-star Troll has a ruddy red one.
- Trolls are 7 meters tall and can move through corridors 2 meters wide or wider.
- Trolls share a faction with Greydwarf Shamans, so the healing pollen the Shamans release also heals Trolls.
- They cannot jump or swim, but they walk along the bottom of shallow water, sometimes getting a long way from the shore, and they move through shallow water faster than a player can swim.
- Every Troll attack except its rock throw has a tool tier of 2, so you can use Trolls to break resources your own gear cannot handle yet. Trolls knock down and break apart Oak and Birch trees, which is useful early on for getting Finewood without a Bronze Axe or better. They also break Copper and Tin deposits, even with the rock throw, which lets you make Bronze before killing the first boss, Eikthyr.
- Trolls lured into more hostile biomes also attack most creatures there, because they belong to a different faction. They are not a good match for stronger enemies such as Plains creatures, but they can kill large numbers of Swamp creatures and leave drops like Entrails and Bloodbags behind for you to collect.
