Ruby is loot first and foremost, and it is worth whatever a trader will pay for it. You find the stones in chests in the Burial Chambers dotted all over the Black Forest, and later in the Sunken Crypts of the Swamp.

How to Get It
Rubies come out of chests, so the work is clearing the places that hold them, not swinging a particular tool. Burial Chambers in the Black Forest are usually where you find your first ones, and all they ask for is a torch, a weapon and the patience to open every side room. Sunken Crypts hold them too, which means you need a Swamp Key from The Elder to get through the door. Surface chests in towers and ruined houses can hold one as well, and now and then a ruby comes up as a bonus with a caught fish.

Traders buy ruby at 20 Coins apiece, and between them they sell the items below.
Haldor
Haldor is the travelling merchant who keeps a camp in the Black Forest.
Hildir
Hildir is the travelling clothier, whose camp stands out in the Meadows.
The Bog Witch
