Ignis Fatuus is an ancient Foglet, one of the Necrophages. It lives in a cave in the south of Crookback Bog in Velen. It is a unique monster, hunted in a witcher contract with a suggested level of 12.

Lore

A peat digger named Leslav gives the warning. A monster prowls the bog, and anyone who walks into the mist never sees home again. The monster turned out to be a very old foglet.

Foglets live for an exceptionally long time. Some have walked the earth for more than two hundred years, and they grow stronger every year. A foglet of that age hits so hard that blocking its blows is out of the question. It moves extremely fast. It can also melt into the mist and appear again behind its victim.

This old foglet is a master of illusions. Only a skilled monster slayer, good with both Signs and swords, could hope to beat it.

Its name is the Latin name for the will o' the wisp.

Behaviour

Ignis Fatuus hides deep inside a cave in the bog. A false wall of rock, made by magic, hides the way in. A thick, poisonous fog covers the swamp near the lair. The fog chokes anyone who breathes it, and it kills the people who wander into it.

Weaknesses

Coat the silver sword with Necrophage Oil. Quen is the most useful Sign, because the foglet's claws hit very hard. Heavy armor helps for the same reason. Yrden does not slow this foglet down. Carry plenty of Moon Dust bombs.

Ignis Fatuus strikes with fast, heavy claw combos. It turns invisible in the fog and attacks from behind. It also calls up illusions of other foglets. These copies deal no damage, but they can knock a fighter off balance. Keep moving, dodge the combos and recast Quen often.

The foglet does not like to leave its fog. Step out of the fog to drink a potion and catch a breath. From the edge, Axii can stun the monster for a moment. Run in for a few hits, then fall back to a safe spot.

Ignis Fatuus Map Location and Quest Guide

Talk to Leslav, the peat digger near Downwarren in Crookback Bog, and take the contract.
Follow the marker to the strange fog in the swamp and investigate it with the Witcher Senses.
Find the false rocks by the cliffs and use the Eye of Nehaleni on them to reveal the cave.
Kill the common foglet in the first part of the cave.
Go deeper into the cave. A cutscene reveals Ignis Fatuus.
Kill Ignis Fatuus and take the trophy from its body.
Return to Leslav for the reward. After haggling, wait a week to get the full sum.

Ignis Fatuus is the target of Contract: Swamp Thing in Velen. Leslav, a peat digger from Downwarren, warns of a deadly fog in the swamp near the village.

The hunt needs the Eye of Nehaleni. This magic item sees through illusions and opens the hidden cave. Inside, a common foglet attacks first. Deeper in the cave, a cutscene reveals Ignis Fatuus itself.

Leslav pays when the job is done. A haggled price is more than the peat digger has on hand, so the full sum comes only after a week of waiting.
