The White Lady is a Noonwraith, one of the Specters. She haunts the farm fields outside Novigrad, south of Farcorners and around the ruined tower of Drahim Castle. She is the target of Contract: The White Lady, which hangs on a notice board just outside the city walls.

Lore

In life, the White Lady was a young woman named Luzi. Her family had promised her in marriage against her will. Heartbroken, she ran out into the fields and slit her wrists with a silver dagger. Some powerful emotion has bound her to that place ever since. It may be love, hate, anger, or all three at once.

Noonwraiths are the spirits of young women who died violent deaths right before their weddings. Mad with pain and anger, they wander the fields in search of unfaithful lovers or rivals. They kill anyone who does not get out of the way in time. An object of strong emotional meaning often holds a noonwraith in this world. So a wedding ring or a torn veil lying in a field is best left alone.

The White Lady roamed the fields for a long time and murdered anyone she came across. The grain hung heavy on the stalks, but the frightened peasants could not bring in the harvest. They faced famine. In the end, they gathered their last savings into a bounty for a witcher.

One group of locals tried another way. Micko's band was four drunken lads who decided to "plough" the White Lady, hoping she would then leave. They took their beer out to the fields near the old tower. Their bodies were found there later.

Behaviour

Noonwraiths only haunt the countryside and stay close to the place where they died. They appear on searing summer days, when the sun stands at its highest. They look like sun-scorched women in long white robes. They prey on peasants at work in the fields and on children playing nearby. Peasants stop work at midday as much to avoid noonwraiths as to escape the heat. A noonwraith can also be met at night, but it is much weaker then.

The White Lady keeps to the fields around Drahim Castle and to its ruined tower. Her presence makes a witcher's medallion throb.

Weaknesses

Coat the silver sword with Specter Oil. Noonwraiths do not bleed and shrug off most Signs. Yrden is the exception. The White Lady often turns immaterial, and then she is almost impossible to hurt. Lay a Yrden trap and draw her into it, or hit her with a Moon Dust bomb. Either forces her back into solid form. Then strike hard with strong blows or Igni.

She also creates mirror images of herself. They circle their victim in a twisted dance that drains life and restores her health. A single quick slash from a silver blade dispels each image. Destroy them at once, because every second they live gives her health back. She can also kick up clouds of dust that blind and confuse for a short time.

Two witcher sayings sum up the fight. The longer a fight with a noonwraith lasts, the lower the odds of surviving it. And anyone who fights one at midday will be dead before dusk.

Contracts and Quests

Quest Quest Giver Location Reward
Contract: The White Lady Notice board Drahim Castle, Novigrad Noonwraith Trophy

The White Lady is hunted in Contract: The White Lady, in the Novigrad region. The notice hangs on the board south of the city walls, in Farcorners. The bounty comes from Helma, a widow who lives nearby. She tells the story of Micko's band and says the monster was last seen near the old tower.

Finding the bodies near Drahim Castle also starts the contract. Witcher Senses reveal the corpses, the beer bottles and a set of footprints. The tracks lead to the tower and to more victims. One of these corpses shows the killer is a noonwraith. Helma then tells Luzi's story and hands over the silver dagger Luzi used on herself. Throwing it into the fire by the bodies of Micko's band brings the White Lady out. Her remains yield a Noonwraith Trophy, and Helma pays the reward.

Notes

Stories disagree on why Luzi took her own life. One tells of a forced marriage to a much older man, the other of a girl sold off by her family.
