Hares bolt. They are long-legged, oddly armoured animals that live in the Mistlands, they never attack anything, and the first one you spot will be forty metres away before you finish drawing. Chase them anyway: their hide is the backbone of both Mistlands armour sets, and nothing else in the world drops it.

Behaviour

Hares are passive and permanently startled. A Hare grazes quietly in the open until it notices something, then sprints, fast enough to break line of sight in the mist before you can line up a second shot. It has no attack, no call, no herd coordination and no interest in you beyond the distance between you. Hit it and it does not turn to fight, it just runs further. Starred Hares behave exactly the same way and only take more hits to put down, which in practice means more chances to lose one in the fog. The mist is the real complication, because you will hear one break cover long before you work out which way it went.

Where to Find It

Hares spawn anywhere in the Mistlands and are very common there, with as many as ten about at once, which makes them one of the few dependable things in a biome otherwise short on them. They favour open rock and the flatter shelves over the deep tangle, and they are out at any hour, since the biome is gloomy enough that day and night hardly change the hunt. One and two star Hares spawn naturally, with rather more meat and a great deal more hide. Nothing gates them beyond reaching the biome, so your first sighting usually comes within a minute of stepping off the boat. Avoid shooting one over deep water, since both the meat and the hide sink.

Strengths and Weaknesses

This is a hunt, not a fight. With ten health, a single arrow of any sort kills it, so the whole problem is hitting it before it is gone. Shoot the moment you spot one, lead it slightly if it has already started moving, and take the shot across open rock instead of into the mist. A bow with your cheapest arrows is the right tool, and a melee weapon is close to useless, because nothing on two legs catches a Hare in a straight line. Terrain does more for you than damage, so work one towards a cliff, a pool or a rock face where it has nowhere left to go. Armour tier does not matter since it cannot hurt you, but carry enough arrows for the ones you will miss.

Drops

Hare Meat goes into the strongest health food in the biome and Scale Hide into every set of Mistlands armour, so a regular hunting circuit is well worth the arrows.

Level Variants

A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately when it spawns, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred Hare is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.

Level Stars Image Health Damage Drops

2 ⭐ Hare 20 150% x2
3 ⭐⭐ Hare 30 200% x4

Notes

  • Hare Meat is used for Misthare Supreme and Meat Platter, two of the most potent HP-boosting foods in the Mistlands.
  • A Hare's meat and hide both sink in water, so avoid killing one over deep water.
