The Forktail is one of the Draconids, a flying beast named for the sharp spikes at the end of its tail. Forktails nest in the wilds of Skellige, around Fyresdal on Ard Skellig, and one is hunted in the hills around Kaer Morhen.
Lore
A veteran of the Mahakaman Volunteer Regiment, Yavinn Buck, opens the bestiary entry with a curse. In the old soldier's words, a Forktail's tail is more like a cleaver than a fork.
The name sounds harmless, almost like table cutlery. The truth is grimmer. The long, sharp growths at the tip of the tail are deadly weapons. One blow can slice an oak shield in two, along with the arm that holds it. A fight with a Forktail is nothing like a dinner party. It ends in death rather than dessert.
Behaviour
Forktails are strong fliers that dive at their prey from the air. They kill livestock and people alike. Near Fyresdal, one Forktail killed cattle and boys from the village before it was hunted down.
Weaknesses
Coat the silver sword with Draconid Oil. Drink Golden Oriole, since the tail is venomous. Aard and Grapeshot help bring the beast down from the air.
The tail is the attack to fear most, so stay out of its reach and dodge the moment it swings. Now and then the Forktail takes to the air and dives at its target. Dodge the dive, then strike while the beast is on the ground.

In the main quest To Bait a Forktail..., Yennefer needs ingredients from a Forktail's body. The witcher Eskel is already hunting one in the wilds near Kaer Morhen. The two witchers lure the beast close, wound it and chase it as it flees. A blood trail leads to a cave, where the Forktail is finally killed.
The Dragon of Fyresdal, the target of Contract: Dragon on Ard Skellig, also turns out to be a Forktail. The village elder of Fyresdal believes a dragon is killing the villagers. The bodies show claw and bite marks, but no burns.
