A knife is for the back of the neck, and the Black Metal Knife is the sharpest one the Plains will give you before the mist closes in. It deals 34 slash and 34 pierce damage. At 68 total damage it ranks 2nd among knives, a step on the ladder rather than the top of it. Pierce damage hurts the Troll more than most things, and that is the reason to carry it.
How to Craft
Crafted at a level 4 Forge from:
- 4x Finewood: chopped from Birch and Oak trees with a Bronze Axe or better.
- 10x Black Metal: smelted from Black Metal Scrap in a Blast Furnace.
- 5x Linen Thread: spun from Flax at a Spinning Wheel.
| Name | Image | Biome | Crafting Station | Spawn ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finewood | Meadows | - | spawn FineWood
| |
| Black Metal | Plains | Blast Furnace | spawn BlackMetal
| |
| Linen Thread | Plains | Spinning Wheel | spawn LinenThread
|
When to Use It
This is mid game gear. Black Metal drops from Fulings in the Plains, well past Moder.
Upgrades
The knife can be upgraded 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station built one step higher than the last. Every figure quoted elsewhere on this page is quality 1, so here is the full upgrade ladder your own copy sits somewhere on:
| Quality | Crafting Station | Pierce | Slash | Durability | Resources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Forge (Level 4) | 34 | 34 | 200 |
|
| 2 | Forge (Level 5) | 35 | 35 | 250 |
|
| 3 | Forge (Level 6) | 36 | 36 | 300 |
|
| 4 | Forge (Level 7) | 37 | 37 | 350 |

Properties
With 34 slash and 34 pierce, it is the hardest-hitting one-handed knife. That is nearly 70 damage before the sneak multiplier, at 12 stamina, still cheaper than any sword of the same tier.
The secondary attack is where the class peaks. It is a 5 metre leap at 3x damage, and 6x again if the target has not noticed you, so the 2 multipliers stack into the biggest single hit a knife can land. On a sneaking player it is extraordinarily powerful.
Notes
- The 6x applies to an enemy that has not noticed you, not to one busy attacking someone else, so it is a Sneaking mechanic rather than a positional one.
- The primary combo hits for 1x, 1x and then 2x, so the third hit carries the damage, and the whole combo takes 1.74 seconds.
- The primary's knockback of 10 is the lowest in the game, which keeps a target inside the combo instead of pushing it out of reach.
