You hear them before you see them. The Fuling is a goblin about the size of a child, armed with whatever the tribe had spare, and it owns the Plains in a way no earlier enemy owns its biome. One on its own is a fair fight in Black Metal gear. Three at once, which is how they usually arrive, have killed a great many well-equipped Vikings within sight of their own longship.
Behaviour
Fulings are fast, agile and unusually sharp-eared. They pick out a player from further away than anything earlier in the game, then cover the distance at a run, chattering and laughing the whole way. They travel in loose groups rather than a formal pack, and they answer each other's noise, so a fight that starts at one end of a camp usually ends with the whole camp on top of you. Each one spawns holding a single weapon, and that decides how it fights. A club deals blunt, a sword deals slash, and a torch applies Burning on top of its fire damage, all swung in a short horizontal arc that reaches about two and a half metres. The spear carrier is the exception and the one to watch, because it throws a pierce projectile up to fourteen metres, eating into distance you thought was safe. Most wear a piece of armour, and about a third carry a wooden shield that they really do raise and block with. They neither sleep nor flee. Those that spawn in open grass at night burn off at dawn, but the ones that live in camps stay.
Where to Find It
Fulings are the standard population of the Plains and you find them everywhere in it, though how many you meet depends heavily on the time of day. By day only a couple wander the open grass at a time, and after dark they become very common. The permanent ones live in structures, and those are the dangerous ones: Fuling Villages, smaller outposts and scattered ruins all have fixed spawn points whose Fulings come with their star levels already rolled. A one star Fuling has double the health of a normal one and a two star has triple, with damage scaling to match. They also turn up far from home. The raid event "The horde is attacking!" drops up to eight of them on your base wherever you built it, and the "They were bros, man." event sends a group with at least one star each. Once Yagluth is dead they start spawning at night in most other biomes, an unwelcome surprise for anyone who thought their Meadows farm was done with them.

Strengths and Weaknesses
A Fuling has only a hundred and seventy five health at base, so toughness is never the problem. The problem is that they arrive in numbers and hit about as hard as a Draugr Elite. Spirit is the only damage type that fails against them, so bring whatever you fight best with: a Black Metal Sword, an atgeir for the crowd, or a Draugr Fang loaded with Obsidian Arrows. Their stagger threshold is low, which makes parrying very strong. A parried club leaves a Fuling wide open long enough for a two-hander to finish it outright. Never let yourself get surrounded on flat ground. Fight in a doorway, on a rock or behind a ditch, because Fulings read terrain poorly and will mill about at the edge of a trench rather than work their way round it. They are also poor swimmers, so pulling a camp across water and shooting them as they struggle through it is an old trick that still works. Pick out the spear thrower before you commit, and kill any Shaman in the group first so it cannot shield the rest. With full Black Metal and a decent food stack, an ordinary group becomes routine work, while a two star village guard is still a real fight in anything less.
- It is immune to Spirit damage.
Drops
Black Metal Scrap is the reason you clear the camps at all, and the coins pile up fast enough to pay for a proper trader run.

Level Variants
A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars next to its name. Each level is rolled separately when it spawns, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred Fuling is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.

Notes
- Fulings have unusually sharp hearing and can detect you from much further away than other enemies. Chopping trees or mining ore is likely to draw their attention.
- Fulings are fairly noisy. Their distinctive chatter or laughter is often the first sign that they are active nearby.
- Fulings are extremely fast and agile, but they sometimes miss the edge of a player-dug ditch until it is too late to avoid falling in.
- Fulings swim particularly slowly. You can use this to your advantage, for example by jumping across a river, natural or player-made, and firing arrows at them while they slowly follow.
- Most creatures in Valheim draw on counterparts in Norse mythology, but the Fuling seems to be an exception. The closest parallel is the Goblin, a creature more common in fantasy works since Dungeons & Dragons popularised it. The game files back this up by naming them "Goblin".
- "Fuling" roughly translates as "ugly one" in modern Swedish.
