The Bear is one of the Beasts, a large and powerful wild animal. Bears roam the wilds of White Orchard, so one can turn up in the first hours of the game.

Lore

A royal huntsman named Jahne Oldak opens the bestiary entry by mocking an old nursery song. In the song, a bear climbs a mountain to see what it can see. The huntsman says a bear climbs a mountain for one reason only: to hunt and to kill.

Bears eat almost anything. Berries, roots and salmon fill most of their diet, but people also make the menu. The humans they eat are most often travelers who strayed into a bear's territory without knowing it. The rest are hunters who made killing a bear their life's ambition.

There are several kinds of bear. Black Bears, Polar Bears and Cave Bears differ in color, size and strength. All of them share one trait: a near-unmatched ability to kill.

Behaviour

Bears live alone and keep to their own territory. A single bear is dangerous enough, and they are usually met one at a time. Despite their bulk, they are surprisingly fast.

Weaknesses

A bear is an ordinary animal, so coat the steel sword with Beast Oil. Quen guards against its heavy blows. Yrden slows a bear enough to make its attacks easier to dodge. Axii stuns it for a few free strikes. Igni sets it on fire, and burning holds it back for a moment.

Blocking or parrying a bear's blow is a losing game, since its strength is far too great. Rely on speed instead: dodge the paw swipes and cut at its sides. When a bear rears up on its hind legs, it is about to slam its front paws into the ground. Get well clear before they land.
