The Panther is a large wild cat, one of the Beasts. It lives in the forests and woodlands of Toussaint. Panthers are met in the Blood and Wine story.
Lore
A rare variant of an old nursery rhyme ends with a warning. The pussy cat went to Cintra to look at the queen. But run, fool, for that is no cat. It is a panther.
In many country areas, people still believe panthers are the lost souls of those who die in their sleep. By this belief, anyone who dies that way should be dragged to the nearest woods and left there unburied. The panther spirit of the dead person can then eat its own body and pass on to the next world.
This belief must be stamped out by any means. It leads to outbreaks of cholera and other diseases that spread from rotting corpses. It is also plainly silly. Panthers are not Necrophages and never eat dead flesh of any kind. They prefer lively prey, such as deer or even humans, as long as the humans are not sick and do not smell too bad.
Behaviour
Panthers are dangerous hunters. They are quick, agile and, like all cats, fiendishly cunning. Panthers and their tawny cousins, the mountain lions, are incredibly swift. They can sneak up on prey unseen to catch it by surprise. Once they reach open ground, they leap in at astonishing speed. They maul their prey with sharp claws, long teeth and the sheer force of the charge.
Weaknesses
Coat the blade with Beast Oil. Panthers are vulnerable to every Sign, as well as to bombs and oils.
Panthers often back off in the middle of a fight. Do not be fooled by it. The retreat is only a trick to set up another surprise attack. Never drop the guard until the animal is dead.

In Wine is Sacred, a main quest of Blood and Wine, Anna Henrietta rides to Castel Ravello under escort. On the way, panthers attack a group of peasants, and the peasants need saving. Panthers also appear in The Warble of a Smitten Knight.
