Dog

Dog

Species	Beasts
DLC	Base game
Oil	Beast Oil
Location	Velen Novigrad Skellige White Orchard

The Dog is one of the Beasts. Wild dogs roam Velen, Novigrad and Skellige, and a pack can turn up in the very first hours of the game.

Lore

Alfred Pankratz, a beggar from Novigrad, once said that a dog may be a man's best friend. In these foul times, he added, it is best to be wary even of friends.

Some claim dogs are a mirror of their masters. A well-treated pet repays its owner with loyalty and trust. An ill-treated one repays its treatment in kind. It meets yells with barks and kicks with bites. Bad men are plentiful, so bad dogs are plentiful too. The most dangerous of all are the stray mutts. They have lost all respect for people and grown a taste for blood and carrion.

Behaviour

Dogs usually attack in packs. They pick on lone victims, above all those who seem weak in some way. Packs of rabid dogs only dare to attack children, drunks, the old and the crippled. Yet a cornered dog will defend itself against anyone, with frothing bites and sharp claws.

Weaknesses

Coat the blade with Beast Oil. A single dog is little threat. The danger is the pack. Dogs are nimble, fast and aggressive, and several can close in from different sides at once. Keep moving, and cut down each dog quickly before the next one strikes.

Contracts and Quests

Quest	Quest Giver	Location	Reward
The Beast of White Orchard	-	White Orchard	300 XP

Wild dogs appear in The Beast of White Orchard, a main quest in White Orchard. Mislav, a local hunter, is out in the woods stalking a pack of them. He can be helped to put the dogs down before he shows the place where the griffin struck.

In the secondary quest A Dog's Life, wolves attack a lone dog on a road near Drudge in Velen. Saving it reveals a key sewn into its collar. The dog then leads the way to its owner's home. The quest fails if the dog dies or if the witcher strays too far while following it.

A friendly dog also helps in Missing in Action, in White Orchard. Dune Vildenvert is searching for his lost brother Bastien, and his dog Hussar goes along. On the battlefield, Hussar picks up the scent and leads the way to an abandoned cabin, where Bastien lies badly wounded.
