The Madness Ingot is smelted from Madness Ore, a brown metal veined with glowing gold that comes from the Shivering Isles by way of the Saints and Seducers Creation. Two ores make one ingot. Madness armour holds the highest base rating in the game for both the cuirass and the shield, and the weapons beat Dragonbone at a small cost in weight.
Acquisition
Madness Ore cannot be mined. No vein of it exists anywhere in Skyrim or on Solstheim. It turns up occasionally in dungeon boss chests and is stocked by Khajiit caravan traders once Ri'saad passes on his note about new wares, and that is the whole supply.
The ingot is never sold either, so a full suit means a long stretch of buying ore two or three at a time.
Requirements
The Note on Amber and Madness Ore begins a miscellaneous quest that ends in Evethra's Journal, and the journal carries the recipes. Crafting also needs Ebony Smithing, third on the heavy side of the Smithing tree, so 80 Smithing with its prerequisites already paid for.
Every Madness item tempers with a single ingot, armour and weapons alike.
Value
The ore is the expensive half, so smelting loses value per piece.
