Holdin' On is the side job in which Johnny Silverhand visits his old bandmate, Kerry Eurodyne,. It starts after Chippin' In or Blistering Love, when Johnny asks V to meet him at the North Oak Sign in Westbrook. Johnny has heard that Kerry is depressed and has tried to end his life, and he wants to see his friend through V's eyes.

Story

Kerry

The journal is pure Johnny. The whole time he lay on his digital backside in Mikoshi, Kerry was out forging a glittering solo career. He had better be really relaxed after all these years. But something tells Johnny that deep down, Kerry is still the same. And the guy will be scared out of his wits when he sees him.

After the date with Rogue at the Silver Pixel Cloud, or the talk at the Northern Oil Fields, Johnny waits by a pond at the foot of the North Oak sign. He wants V to go to Kerry's villa, a short walk away, so he can talk to his old friend.

The Villa

Security bots patrol Kerry's grounds, and nobody answers the intercom. V climbs the rocks beside the gate to get in. Inside, Kerry is in the shower. The villa is full of things that prompt Johnny to talk: a guitar collection, the dining table, the bed and a car sunk in the pool.

Never Fade Away

Near the guitar displays, V takes the pills and hands control to Johnny. Johnny picks up a guitar and plays one of his old songs, Never Fade Away. Kerry storms out of the shower, revolver in hand, but quickly recognises Johnny by the way he plays. He still tests him, asking what Johnny told him before he died.

Samurai Again

The two sit and drink and talk about their old lives. Johnny asks whether Kerry would get Samurai back together for one more gig, and Kerry agrees. Kerry will gather the rest of the band, while Johnny has to bring in Nancy Hartley. When V calls Nancy, her assistant Steven answers instead. Nancy has been missing for two days, ever since she went to the Totentanz to chase a story.

North Oak

Finish Chippin' In or Blistering Love and talk to Johnny.
Meet Johnny by the pond at the foot of the North Oak sign and talk to him.
Follow the marker to Kerry's villa nearby.

The Villa

Try the intercom. Kerry does not answer.
Climb the rocks to the right of the gate to get onto the property.
Sneak past the security bots to the front door.
Look around the villa if desired. The guitars, the dining table, the bed and the car in the pool each start a talk with Johnny.
Go to the double doors near the guitar collection and take the pills to let Johnny take over.

Kerry

Take Kerry's guitar and play Never Fade Away to lure him out.
Talk to Kerry. When he asks what Johnny told him before he died, answer that Johnny told him to leave Samurai and go his own way.
Follow Kerry, sit and drink with him, and agree to help bring Samurai back.
Talk to Johnny after V wakes up.
Call Nancy and talk to her assistant.

Choices

The talk with Kerry changes the dialogue, but agreeing to help bring back Samurai moves the story on to Second Conflict.
