Chippin' In is the side job in which Johnny Silverhand and Rogue Amendiares hunt Adam Smasher, the man who killed Johnny. It starts at the Afterlife after Tapeworm, with V giving Johnny control of V's body to talk to Rogue. The trail leads to the Ebunike docks and ends at Johnny's grave in the oil fields, where V's words decide whether the secret ending and Rogue's storyline stay open.

Story

Johnny and Rogue

The journal says Rogue is ready to stop running from her past and go after Smasher, and Johnny wants to be the one who pulls the trigger. For now, though, V is in charge.

At the Afterlife, V takes the pills that hand control of the body to Johnny. As Johnny, the night plays out in A Cool Metal Fire. V wakes up in a motel room with Rogue watching over V. She says Johnny told her about Smasher, and she leaves to gather information about the Ebunike.

The Ebunike

About a day later, Rogue calls. The Ebunike is an old container ship in the harbour of Northside. At the Afterlife, V talks briefly with Rogue's man Crispin Weyland, and then follows Rogue to her car, where she gives V a replica of Johnny's Samurai jacket. They drive to the Ebunike docks.

At the docks, a terminal confirms that Smasher's right hand, Jeremiah Grayson, is on board. Exploring the ship, V can find signs of Smasher's work: a raid on Kang Tao weapons bound for South Africa, the body of a woman killed in Smasher's signature style, evidence that he blackmailed Anthony Gilchrist of Militech by taking a woman hostage, and crates of a drug labelled Tri-phet.

Grayson

After a firefight, Grayson is beaten but alive. He hints that Rogue was once on Smasher's side, and that there is more to why she was never hunted down after the bombing of Arasaka Tower. Rogue dismisses it as a distraction. Grayson also reveals where Johnny's body was buried and where Johnny's old Porsche is stored. V takes Johnny's pistol from him.

The Grave

V drives Johnny's Porsche out to the oil fields north of the city to look for his unmarked grave. At the site, V and Johnny have a long talk about everything they have been through, and what is still to come. What V says here decides whether Johnny gets a second chance.

The Afterlife

  1. Go to the Afterlife after Tapeworm and talk to Johnny at the entrance.
  2. Take the pills to give Johnny control and play through A Cool Metal Fire.
  3. Wake up in the motel room and talk to Rogue.
  4. Wait about a day for Rogue's call.
  5. Meet Rogue at the Afterlife and talk to Weyland.
  6. Follow Rogue to her car and take the gift from the boot.
  7. Get into Rogue's car.

The Docks

  1. Follow Rogue to the Ebunike docks and open the cargo door.
  2. Find the dataterm in a small room of a building by the railyard. A path on the east side, with enough Technical Ability, is a shortcut.
  3. Check the dataterm.
  4. Cross the railyard and climb the long metal stairs to the ship's deck.
  5. Look for Smasher on the Ebunike. Listen to the recordings if desired.
  6. Defeat Grayson and his men.
  7. Question Grayson about Smasher.
  8. Take Johnny's gun from Grayson.
  9. Kill or spare Grayson. Spared, he gives V the key to Johnny's car and tells V where it is.

The Porsche

  1. Lower the crane with the panel.
  2. Open the container and remove the canvas cover.
  3. Get into Johnny's Porsche.

The Oil Fields

  1. Drive to the oil fields.
  2. Find Johnny's grave and inscribe his initials.
  3. Talk to Johnny.

Choices

The Second Chance

At the grave, Johnny says he has managed one thing: not to mess up what they have. To keep the secret ending open, answer that he messed that up too, ask what he wants from V, and then agree that this is his last second chance. Johnny then asks V to invite Rogue on a date, starting Blistering Love, which opens Rogue's ending path.

Answering "A hard road, but looks like we made it" and then "Johnny, no need to bare your soul to me" also starts Blistering Love, but without the secret ending. Refusing Johnny the second chance leads him to ask V to see Kerry Eurodyne instead, starting Holdin' On, and Blistering Love and Rogue's path are then lost.

Grayson

Sparing Grayson gets the key to the Porsche from him. Killing him still lets V loot the key, but the container has to be found without his directions.

Rewards

Completing Chippin' In rewards Replica of Johnny's Samurai jacket, Malorian Arms 3516 (2077) and Porsche 911 Turbo (930) (missable).

The Iconic pistol Malorian Arms 3516 is taken from Grayson. Rogue gives V the replica of Johnny's Samurai jacket. Johnny's car, the Porsche 911 Turbo, waits in a container at the docks. Johnny's Aviators are unlocked after A Cool Metal Fire.

Tips

The ship's hidden weapon store can be entered by remotely switching off the stern back door.

After an ending in which Smasher is beaten, his access token can be looted. Returning to the point of no return, it opens Smasher's hidden office aboard the Ebunike, with the crafting spec for the Iconic smart shotgun Ba Xing Chong.
