The Mk. 31 HMG is a Militech heavy machine gun built to be mounted on turrets and armored vehicles. A V with enough Body can tear one free and carry it. The gun fires on full auto from one long ammo belt. When the belt runs out, V drops the gun for good. Its huge belt suits fights against large groups of enemies. The Mk. 31 HMG can be had at any stage of the story, from Militech Aegis X2 turrets and from heavy gunner enemies.
Combat
The HMG overheats during long bursts. Short bursts keep it firing until the belt is spent.
Carrying the HMG slows V down and stops sprinting and dodging. The gun lives only in V's hands. Switching weapons or getting into a vehicle drops it on the spot.
Tearing the gun loose is also a way to deal with the turret it came from. An Aegis X2 turret can be overridden with Technical Ability or stripped of its HMG with Body. Stripping it hands V the turret's firepower until the belt runs out.
How to Get Mk. 31 HMG Guide
- Find a Militech Aegis X2 turret.
- Pass the turret's Body check and rip the Mk. 31 HMG free.
- Take one from a heavy gunner enemy who carries it.
Character Builds
Heavy machine guns share their perks with shotguns and light machine guns in the Body tree. Die! Die! Die! raises crit chance at low Stamina. Its second level adds fire rate and better handling as Stamina falls. Like A Feather removes the movement penalty of heavy weapons, so V walks at normal speed with the HMG. Bullet Ballet reduces spread while moving. Don't Stop Me Now raises Mitigation chance and strength while Stamina is below a third.
Spontaneous Obliteration adds damage against nearby enemies. It also unlocks Obliterate, a chance to instantly kill and dismember enemies with low Health. Close-Quarters Carnage raises the chance to obliterate enemies at close range. Dread lowers the armor of enemies V shoots. A dismemberment spreads that effect to nearby enemies.
The HMG is a Power weapon, so the Ballistic Coprocessor raises its ricochet chance and adds ricochet damage. Body also decides whether V can pick the gun up at all. Tearing the HMG off a turret is a Body check.
Lore
The in-game line announces that it is time for the artillery to roll in. Its database entry says Militech built the gun to be mounted on armored vehicles and defensive lines. It was meant to stay bolted down. Heavy gunners in Night City carry it anyway.
The entry calls the Mk. 31 a one-hit wonder, because one person cannot easily reload it in combat. It also says this is rarely a problem. By the time the belt is empty, there is usually nobody left to shoot.
