Grenades

CHAR Incendiary Grenade

Grenades are the thrown explosives of Night City. They hit a whole group of enemies at once, or they reach a target hiding behind cover. Some grenades deal damage, and others blind, scan or hide. Every grenade sits in the gadget slot, so one type is ready at a time. Grenades suit any build, and a Technical Ability build gets the most out of them.

Combat

A grenade is thrown from the gadget slot. A regular grenade bounces off objects and explodes a short moment after it lands. A sticky grenade sticks to the first surface or enemy it hits. A homing grenade flies straight to the nearest enemy. Many grenades come in more than one of these throwing types, and each type has its own crafting spec.

Grenades work on charges. A thrown grenade uses one charge, and the charge refills over time. Perks and cyberware make the charges come back faster or add more of them.

The damage grenades use the four damage types of the game. The F-GX Frag Grenade and Ozob's Nose deal Physical damage. The CHAR Incendiary Grenade deals Thermal damage and applies Burn. The EMP Grenade deals Electrical damage and applies an EMP effect. The MOLODETS BioHaz Grenade deals Chemical damage and applies Poison. The GASH Antipersonnel Grenade fires lasers in every direction and decapitates weakened enemies.

The utility grenades change the fight in other ways. The X-22 Flashbang Grenade blinds human enemies and ruins their aim. The Recon Grenade reveals enemies behind cover, lures them with a sound and speeds up Smart weapon lock-on. The Smoke Grenade puts up a smoke screen.

Grenades follow the same tier system as weapons. Higher tiers deal more damage or give stronger effects. Higher tiers also unlock as V levels up, so weapon vendors stock better grenades later in the game. Crafting a grenade needs its crafting spec and crafting components of the matching tier.

Pros

  • A grenade hits every enemy inside its radius, so it is strong against groups.
  • A grenade reaches enemies behind low walls and around corners.
  • Charges refill on their own, so grenades never run out for good.
  • Status effects such as Burn, Poison and Blinding keep working after the throw.

Cons

  • The gadget slot holds one grenade type at a time.
  • A regular grenade has a short delay before it explodes.
  • An explosion close to V also hurts V.

Character Builds

Grenade perks sit in the Technical Ability tree.

  • Glutton For War gives a small instant recharge of grenades and Health Items after V neutralizes an enemy.
  • Health Freak raises the recharge speed of grenades and Health Items.
  • Coming In Hot speeds up grenade recharge when no grenade is left.
  • Demolitions Surplus adds one more grenade charge. It also makes grenades refill much faster outside combat.
  • Pyromania raises the explosion radius of grenades. Its last level adds movement speed and explosion damage after V hits an enemy with an explosion.
  • Burn This City uses five stacks of Pyromania to refill a grenade charge at once.
  • Flash Sale doubles the charges and the recharge rate of Flash, Smoke and Recon grenades.
  • Friendlier Fire lowers the damage and effects V takes from V's own explosions.

The Cellular Adapter is an Integumentary System implant. It raises grenade recharge speed for each point of Technical Ability.

The Projectile Launch System is the arm implant alternative to grenades. It fires an explosive projectile that deals heavy Physical damage. A charged shot gains more damage and a larger blast. It uses charges like a grenade. Pyromania raises its explosion radius too. The Doomlauncher perk gives the launcher more charges and faster recharge, and it shares the bonus from Burn This City. An explosives build can run the launcher and grenades side by side.

Other perks pair with the status effects of grenades. Opportunist makes Blinded enemies more open to Finishers. Corrosion lets Poison work on mechs, robots, drones and turrets. Black Mamba is a Circulatory System implant that adds damage against Poisoned enemies. Contagion at Tier 4 detonates on enemies hit by Burn.

Notes

  • Detonate Grenade is an Ultimate quickhack that forces an enemy to set off the grenade in its own hands. The blast depends on the grenade type the enemy carries.
  • Pull! is a Cool perk that makes it easier to shoot grenades out of the air during Focus. The blast is also more powerful.
  • The GASH Antipersonnel Grenade comes only at Tier 5. Its crafting spec lies at an Assault in Progress in Rancho Coronado.
  • The lock-on bonus of the Recon Grenade works with Smart weapons. Smart targeting comes from the Smart Link implant.
