The Iron Axe fells the same trees a bronze one can, just in fewer swings, and it cuts down a Greydwarf just as readily. It deals 60 slash and 50 chop, its materials come from the Swamp, and you make it at a Forge. At 110 total damage it ranks 11th among axes, so it is a step on the ladder rather than the top of it.
How to Craft
Craft it at a level 2 forge from:
- 4x Wood: Chopped from any tree.
- 20x Iron: Smelted from Scrap Iron in a Smelter.
- 2x Leather Scraps: Drops from boars and bats, and dug out of muddy scrap piles.
| Name | Image | Biome | Crafting Station | Spawn ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | All biomes | - | spawn Wood
| |
| Iron | Swamp | Smelter | spawn Iron
| |
| Leather Scraps | Meadows | - | spawn LeatherScraps
|
When to Use It
This is early game gear. Iron comes from Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, so it opens up once The Elder is down.
Upgrades
You can upgrade it 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station built one step higher than the last. Every other figure on this page is for quality 1, so this table shows where your own copy sits:
| Quality | Crafting Station | Slash | Chop (trees) | Durability | Resources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Forge (Level 2) | 60 | 50 | 175 |
|
| 2 | Forge (Level 3) | 65 | 53 | 225 |
|
| 3 | Forge (Level 4) | 70 | 56 | 275 |
|
| 4 | Forge (Level 5) | 75 | 59 | 325 |
|
Properties
It brings more damage but the same trees. It deals 60 slash against bronze's 40, and it fells the same list of trees: Birch, Oak and Ancient. Yggdrasil shoots and Scorched trees have to wait for Black Metal or the Jotun Bane.
It needs the Forge at level 2, so in practice an anvil upgrade is part of the recipe.
Notes
- Chop damage works on trees but not on creatures, which is why only an axe will fell a tree.
- Which trees an axe can fell depends on its tier. Stone and flint handle Beech, Fir and Pine. Bronze and iron add Birch, Oak and the Ancient Tree. Only the Black Metal Axe and the Jotun Bane cut Yggdrasil shoots and Scorched trees.
- The first hit of a two-handed combo is by far the slowest at 1.58 seconds. The second and third take about 0.92 and 0.7 seconds and deal triple damage between them.
