The Black Metal Axe does double duty: the same green-sheened edge takes down Plains Fulings and birch trunks, as long as you have enough scrap to smelt. It deals 100 slash and 60 chop damage. At 160 total damage it ranks 9th among axes, a step on the ladder rather than the top of it.
How to Craft
Crafted at a level 4 Forge from:
- 6x Finewood: chopped from Birch and Oak trees with a Bronze Axe or better.
- 20x Black Metal: smelted from Black Metal Scrap in a Blast Furnace.
- 5x Linen Thread: spun from Flax at a Spinning Wheel.
| Name | Image | Biome | Crafting Station | Spawn ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finewood | Meadows | - | spawn FineWood
| |
| Black Metal | Plains | Blast Furnace | spawn BlackMetal
| |
| Linen Thread | Plains | Spinning Wheel | spawn LinenThread
|
When to Use It
This is mid game gear. Black Metal drops from Fulings in the Plains, well past Moder.
Upgrades
The axe can be upgraded 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station built one step higher than the last. Every figure quoted elsewhere on this page is quality 1, so here is the full upgrade ladder your own copy sits somewhere on:
| Quality | Crafting Station | Slash | Chop (trees) | Durability | Resources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Forge (Level 4) | 100 | 60 | 175 |
|
| 2 | Forge (Level 5) | 105 | 63 | 225 |
|
| 3 | Forge (Level 6) | 110 | 66 | 275 |
|
| 4 | Forge (Level 7) | 115 | 69 | 325 |

Properties
This is the axe that cuts everything. It is the first to fell Yggdrasil shoots and Scorched trees on top of the usual list, which makes it the woodcutting key to the Mistlands and the Ashlands.
100 slash damage for 14 stamina makes it the best one-handed fighting axe before the Black Forge tier, though the Jotun Bane chops harder despite being made of iron.
Notes
- Chop damage hits trees, not creatures, which is why a tree only falls to an axe.
- Which trees an axe can fell depends on its tier. Stone and flint handle Beech, Fir and Pine, bronze and iron add Birch, Oak and the Ancient Tree, and only the Black Metal Axe and the Jotun Bane cut Yggdrasil shoots and Scorched trees.
- The first hit of a two-handed combo is by far the slowest at 1.58 seconds. The second and third take about 0.92 and 0.7 seconds and carry triple damage between them.
