Breastplate of the Protector is the chest piece of the Protector Armor. It gives 44 armour at quality 1 and frost resistance that keeps off the freezing cold of the Deep North.

How to Craft

Crafted in a Frost Foundry from:

Name Image Biome Crafting Station Spawn ID
Cast: Breastplate of the Protector Cast: Breastplate of the Protector Deep North Black Forge spawn ArmorGoldHeavyChestUncooked
Liquid Frost Liquid Frost Deep North Frigid Kiln spawn FrozenFuel

Mould

Mould: Breastplate of the Protector drops in the Deep North:

  • Dropped by Krigen that fight with two axes.

When to Use It

End game. You can only progress through the Deep North once Fader is dead.

Upgrades

You can upgrade it twice at the Black Forge. Each step needs the station one level higher than the last and costs the per-level amount, then twice that. Quality 4, at four times the per-level amount, needs a level 7 Black Forge, above its current maximum of 6, so that row is not available yet.

Quality Crafting Station Armor Durability Resources
1 Frost Foundry 44 1000
2 Black Forge (Level 5) 46 1200
3 Black Forge (Level 6) 48 1400
4 Black Forge (Level 7, not yet available) 50 1600

Properties

The Protector set has the most armour of any set in the game: 44 a piece and 132 for all three at quality 1, rising to 144 at quality 3. Yet none of its pieces slows you down, so the movement penalty every earlier heavy set carried is gone. It is cast at a level 4 Black Forge, repaired at one, and upgraded there at level 5 for quality 2 and level 6 for quality 3.

As in the Mountains, all weather in the Deep North counts as freezing, day and night. Outdoors and away from a fire you are Freezing: no health regeneration, stamina and eitr regenerating 60% slower, and a point of damage every second. Near a fire or under a roof you are only Cold. Any frost resistance stops both, and the breastplate is the Protector piece that carries it.

Its mould drops from Krigen that fight with two axes: three times in a hundred from a plain one, six from a one-star and twelve from a two-star. Dual-axe Krigen live on the floors of Mörkhalla, and the Malicious Ice at the centre of a Jotun invasion adds them to its waves.

It gives 44 armour at quality 1 and 48 at quality 3, weighs 5, and has 1000 durability, 1400 at quality 3.

That is 6 more than the Flametal Breastplate, the best chest piece before the Deep North.

Quality 4 needs a level 7 Black Forge, above its current maximum of 6, so in practice it stops at quality 3.

Crafting it from scratch and taking it to quality 3 costs 65 Bloodgold, 17 Moose Hide and 13 Leather Straps, plus a mould and 5 Liquid Frost.

For this slot in the Deep North, the Protector breastplate has 44 armour and weighs 5, the Vanguard chestpiece has 34 armour and weighs 5, and the Caller robes have 22 armour and weigh 5, at -2% movement. All three weigh the same, so you are choosing between the Protector's armour, the Vanguard's set bonus and the Caller's eitr.
