A Mechanical Spring is iron wound tight around a thread of Refined Eitr. It stores tension the way nothing else in Valheim does, which is why every trap and every ballista on a fortified base has one buried inside it. Its ingredients come from the Swamp and Mistlands.
How to Get It
You craft Mechanical Springs rather than find them, at an Artisan Table from Iron and Refined Eitr. That puts Moder in front of them, for the Dragon Tears the table costs, plus a Mistlands foothold with an Eitr Refinery running on Sap and Soft Tissue. The finished springs cannot go through a wooden Portal, so until the Ashlands lets you raise a Stone Portal they travel by longship or not at all. Craft them at the base you mean to defend and the problem disappears.
