Location

The Chort is a Relict and a slightly smaller relative of the Fiend and the bumbakvetch. It lives in dark, ancient forests. Its smaller size fools many, yet it is one of the most dangerous monsters known to man.

Lore

An herbalist from the Black Forest, Agnes Thistle, put it plainly: chorts are smaller than fiends, but still big enough to kill. Any witcher who thinks a chort is harmless because of its size makes a grave mistake. That kind of mistake can end a career for good.

Legends often mix chorts up with sylvans. The stories say chorts talk, walk on two legs, eat cabbages, play pranks and make mischief around the house. The arrival of a real chort soon puts an end to such tales.

A real chort does not talk. At best it grunts, snorts and moans to others of its kind. It walks on all four legs. Its idea of mischief is to wreck a farm and eat everything that can be eaten. The cabbages go first if there are any. Then come the chickens, the pigs, the family dog and finally the family itself.

Behaviour

Chorts fight with little skill. A chort runs straight at its foe and tries to knock it down with the force of its charge. Once the foe is down, the chort bites, kicks and strikes with its clawed paws.

Weaknesses

Coat the blade with Relict Oil. Igni works very well against a chort and sets it burning. Aard does little, because the chort's size and four-legged stance keep it steady. Devil's Puffball bombs poison it.

The charge is the attack to watch for, so roll aside every time the chort runs in. Its claw attacks are fast and sweep wide in front of it. Its wounds close fast, so the damage has to come quickly.

Contracts and Quests

Quest Quest Giver Location Reward
Berengar's Blade - Kaer Morhen Tor'haerne diagram
Contract: Mysterious Tracks Notice board Lindenvale, Velen Crowns, Chort trophy

A chort guards a lost diagram in the secondary quest Berengar's Blade, at Kaer Morhen. The quest starts with Berengar's notes, found in a chest in the abandoned sleeping quarters of the keep. Vesemir then tells the story behind them. Berengar, a fellow witcher, tried to forge a special silver sword called Tor'haerne. He lost the diagram while he travelled down the river to kill a chort. The chort still waits in a cave downriver from the keep. Killing it gives back the Tor'haerne diagram.

The chort known as the Howler is the target of Contract: Mysterious Tracks. The notice hangs on the board in Lindenvale, and the bounty comes from a local hunter. The tracks lead to a cave known as the Fiend's Cave. The chort has to be drawn out with a Chort Lure poured around the hill.

Notes

A chort named the Bovine Defense Force Initiative appears near the cow pen in White Orchard after too many cows are killed there.
