Archer is a Chinese carmaker whose cheap, sturdy cars fill the streets of Night City. It builds everyday cars for ordinary buyers, and its range sits in the Economy class, the cheapest tier of cars in the game. Archer is best known for the Hella, a small family car, and the Quartz, a low two-seat sports car. A Streetkid or Corpo V starts the game with a Hella. The Quartz leads a second life in the Badlands, where nomads drive it hard across the desert.
History
Archer's story is a lesson in building cars too well. The company launched the first Hella as a cheap family car. It proved so reliable and so easy to repair that it nearly drove Archer into bankruptcy. Many people who bought a Hella never needed to shop for a car again. Old Hellas still roll through Night City, rusted and screeching but still running. The body is the weak spot. It is made from cheap, brittle materials, and little of the car survives a serious crash.
The Hella soon filled the market, and its own success began to hurt Archer's sales. To escape that trap, Archer moved into sports cars. The answer was the Quartz, an affordable two-seater with a durable engine. Its quiet elegance and sturdy build won buyers well beyond the urban middle class. The Quartz also stands up well to the harsh desert climate. It became a mainstay for a large part of the nomad population. The Database adds that city folk who travel the interstates know a Quartz on the horizon spells trouble.
The NCPD trusts Archer too. The police ordered an armoured Hella called the Enforcer. Its cheap plastic and glass gave way to flame-resistant, bulletproof materials, and its flimsy bumpers became hardened steel bars. The Database dryly notes that some officers ram these cars into walls on purpose, and the suspects in the back seat learn a lesson before they reach the station.
Vehicles
Archer builds two model lines. The Hella is a small front-wheel-drive car, cheap to run and easy to fix. V's own Hella is the first car of the story, and it ends up towed after The Heist. Other Hella models drive in city traffic, among them the Hella EC-V i660 Voyage and the police Hella EC-H i860 NCPD Enforcer.
The Quartz is Archer's sports car, a light rear-wheel-drive two-seater. The Quartz EC-L r275 is the cheap entry at €$ 21,000. The Quartz EC-T2 r660 is a Sport class car that costs €$ 31,000 and opens at Street Cred 12. Nomads strip the corporate badges off their Quartz cars and swap the wheels, bumpers and engine. They call the result the "Sidewinder". The Quartz "Sidewinder" carries mounted weapons and unlocks through vehicle contracts for €$ 90,000. The Quartz "Specter" carries machine guns and costs €$ 79,000 with enough Street Cred. The Quartz "Bandit" comes free from Rogue after the main job Ghost Town if V refuses to help kill Nash. Otherwise it sells for €$ 69,000.
Notes
- A Nomad V starts the game in the Thorton Galena "Rattler" instead of the Hella.
- After The Heist, V gets the towed Hella back in the side job Human Nature. A Delamain cab then crashes into it, and Delamain's offer of compensation starts the side job Tune Up.
- The armed Quartz cars fire their machine guns straight ahead, and the guns reload on their own when empty.
