Thorton
Class Manufacturer

Thorton is an American maker of everyday, hard-wearing vehicles, and the nomad clans rely on it more than on anyone else. Its cars are plain, cheap and almost impossible to kill, which is exactly what a life outside the city demands. The Galena, the Colby and the Mackinaw are its backbone, and every one of them has been rebuilt by somebody into something harder. Panam Palmer's truck is a Thorton.

History

Thorton began the Galena with government help, when the authorities tried to pull the country out of recession by paying local makers to build affordable cars. The company had no experience with small cars, so it bought the engines from the Indian maker Mahir Motors instead of designing its own.

The result was judged a failure. The Galena was unremarkable to drive and sold no better than it drove. Over the years that verdict reversed itself, and the car became a classic through sheer persistence.

What followed made the company. Thorton pushed on through the hard years with a wide range of ordinary vehicles and built a reputation for utility above all. It ended up in direct competition with the Chinese maker Archer, both of them fighting over the same middle of the market, and the rivalry pushed both to build sturdier cars than either would have managed alone. By the end of it, Thorton's vehicles were tough enough that nomads were still seeking them out decades later.

Vehicles

Thorton builds five model lines. The Galena is the cheap hatchback, sold as the G240 for €$ 13,000 and as the sporting GA32t. The Colby is the wagon and pickup line, with the C125 at €$ 18,000, the CX410 Butte at 25,000 and the all-wheel-drive CST40. The Mackinaw is the heavy pickup, sold as the MTL1 for €$ 33,000 and as the Larimore. The Merrimac is the corporate sport utility vehicle, and the Chenoa rounds out the range.

The custom versions tell the rest of the story. The Galena "Gecko" sells for €$ 45,000, the "Rattler" comes from the job These Boots Are Made for Walkin', and the Wraiths run the "Ghoul". The Colby "Little Mule" costs €$ 41,000 and the "Gran Butte" comes from Dressed to Kill, while the Valentinos drive the "Vaquero" and the Wraiths the "Revenant". Among the Mackinaws, the "Beast" comes from The Beast In Me and the "Saguaro" from Every Grain of Sand, and the "Warhorse" is Panam's own truck. The Merrimac MSP3 Dreadnought serves the NCPD.

Notes

  • The maker's name is sometimes written as Thornton by mistake, including once in the game itself.
