Nothing in the Plains stays standing long once the Black Metal Battleaxe comes off the forge, though every swing costs you stamina and a long wind-up before it lands. It deals 110 slash and 60 chop damage. At 170 total damage it ranks 7th among axes, a step on the ladder rather than the top of it.
How to Craft
Crafted at a level 4 Forge from:
- 10x Finewood: chopped from Birch and Oak trees with a Bronze Axe or better.
- 30x Black Metal: smelted from Black Metal Scrap in a Blast Furnace.
- 5x Linen Thread: spun from Flax at a Spinning Wheel.
| Name | Image | Biome | Crafting Station | Spawn ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finewood | Meadows | - | spawn FineWood
| |
| Black Metal | Plains | Blast Furnace | spawn BlackMetal
| |
| Linen Thread | Plains | Spinning Wheel | spawn LinenThread
|
When to Use It
This is mid game gear. Black Metal drops from Fulings in the Plains, well past Moder.
Upgrades
The battleaxe can be upgraded 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station built one step higher than the last. Every figure quoted elsewhere on this page is quality 1, so here is the full upgrade ladder your own copy sits somewhere on:
| Quality | Crafting Station | Slash | Chop (trees) | Durability | Resources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Forge (Level 4) | 110 | 60 | 200 |
|
| 2 | Forge (Level 5) | 116 | 62.5 | 250 |
|
| 3 | Forge (Level 6) | 122 | 65 | 300 |
|
| 4 | Forge (Level 7) | 128 | 67.5 | 350 |
|
Properties
Secondary into primary is the loop. Open with the cheap secondary and its 4x stagger, then follow with the 3-hit primary: wide, wide, then a vertical overhead that carries double damage.
110 slash damage for 20 stamina. It is the hardest-hitting axe you can make at a plain Forge, and it needs that Forge at level 4.
Notes
- Chop damage hits trees, not creatures, which is why a tree only falls to an axe.
- Which trees an axe can fell depends on its tier. Stone and flint handle Beech, Fir and Pine, bronze and iron add Birch, Oak and the Ancient Tree, and only the Black Metal Axe and the Jotun Bane cut Yggdrasil shoots and Scorched trees.
- The first hit of a two-handed combo is by far the slowest at 1.58 seconds. The second and third take about 0.92 and 0.7 seconds and carry triple damage between them.
