The chains for the Black Metal Shield come from Swamp Wraiths long before you find Black Metal, and together they give you a parry that holds against a Fuling Berserker. It has 78 block armour.
How to Craft
Crafted at a level 3 Forge from:
- 10x Finewood: chopped from Birch and Oak trees with a Bronze Axe or better.
- 8x Black Metal: smelted from Black Metal Scrap in a Blast Furnace.
- 5x Chain: drops from Wraiths and found in Sunken Crypts.

When to Use It
This is mid game gear. Black Metal drops from Fulings in the Plains, well past Moder.
Upgrades
The shield can be upgraded 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station built one step higher than the last. Every figure quoted elsewhere on this page is quality 1, so here is the full upgrade ladder your own copy sits somewhere on:

Properties
This is the middle option, and the one that parries. It has less raw block armour than the tower shield of its tier, but a round shield can parry, and a parry staggers the attacker into taking double damage for as long as the stagger lasts.
78 armour, or 117 on a parry. Against the Black Metal Tower Shield's 104 block, that makes this the stronger guard of the 2 for anyone who can time a parry, and the weaker one for anyone who cannot.
