Wraiths are the Swamp's night shift: cloaked blue spirits that come in over the water with a hiss and no footsteps at all. With a hundred health and 60 slash a swipe, they are not especially dangerous on their own. The real reason to care is economic. A wraith is the only thing in Valheim that walks around carrying Chain, and a good deal of your later gear is waiting on Chain. Their glow gives them away from a long way off, which is fortunate, because they fly.

Behaviour

A wraith floats instead of walking. It ignores the mud, the water and most of the terrain that slows you to a crawl in the Swamp, and it drifts in a straight line at whatever it has noticed. It gives itself away twice over. Its body glows brightly enough to spot through fog and thick trunks, and it lets out a low snarling hiss once it is aggravated. It has exactly one attack: a melee swipe for 60 slash in a sixty degree arc that reaches about two and a half metres, usable every two seconds at close range. That swipe is its entire moveset, with no projectile, no summon and no retreat. Its one really irritating habit is drifting upward to hover above head height. That puts it out of reach of a great many swings and leaves you waiting for it to come back down. It does not flee or call others, and it has no star variants, so every wraith you meet is exactly as strong as the last one.

Where to Find It

Wraiths spawn anywhere in the Swamp after dark. They are uncommon, capped at two at once, and they despawn at dawn, so farming Chain is night work by definition. The exception is a rare one-time spawn point near the Abandoned Huts scattered through the Swamp. It can be active in daylight too, so it is worth a glance whenever you pass a hut. The third way, and by far the richest, is the raid. Once Bonemass is dead, "You feel a chill down your spine..." starts turning up at your base across the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain and Plains. For its two and a half minutes, wraiths spawn very commonly alongside Ghosts. Nothing else gates them, and none of them arrive starred.

Where and When At Once How Often Stars
Anywhere in Swamps during the nighttime, despawn at dawn 2 Uncommon No
Rare spawn point near Abandoned Huts in Swamps, also during the daytime - One time No
During "You feel a chill down your spine..." event after defeating Bonemass 2 Very common No

Strengths and Weaknesses

They melt to fire and spirit alike. That pairing is rare, and it makes this one of the few fights where a Silver Sword plus a handful of Fire Arrows is simply the correct answer. At silver tier, a wraith dies in two hits. At iron tier, which is when you actually want the Chain, every physical weapon lands at half value and the fight drags badly. Fire is the equaliser there, and even a Torch beats swinging a mace at it. Frost and poison are wasted entirely. A shield handles the single swipe easily, whether you block or parry, and you have no reason to practise dodging here because it has nothing you must avoid. The practical problem is the hovering. When it climbs out of reach, back off and put an arrow into it instead of jumping and swinging at empty air. Night in the Swamp means the wraith is rarely the only thing awake, so clear the Draugr first and fight the wraith somewhere open.

  • It takes extra damage from Fire and Spirit.
  • It shrugs off Blunt, Slash and Pierce.
  • It ignores Frost and Poison.

Drops

Every wraith drops a Chain, the only renewable supply outside Sunken Crypt chests. The trophy is a one-in-twenty afterthought.

Notes

  • Wraiths can be especially dangerous when you first enter the Swamp with Black Forest-tier gear, so early on it is best to stay out of the biome at night.
  • Wraiths are the only renewable way to get Chains; the other major supply is Sunken Crypts.
  • Thanks to their Spirit damage weakness, and given their resistance to physical damage, Silver weapons are around 90% effective, which makes them a good choice. Wraiths are immune to Frost damage, though, so the Frostner is only about 50% effective and a bad choice.
  • If you get under a wraith just right, it can fly directly on top of you. It then cannot hit you, while staying open to two-handed Clubs like the Stagbreaker.
