The Black Metal Sword is the last sword the Plains have to offer, and most players carry it well into the mist before anything better turns up. It deals 95 slash damage. At 95 total damage it ranks 13th among swords, a step on the ladder rather than the top of it.
How to Craft
Crafted at a level 4 Forge from:
- 2x Finewood: chopped from Birch and Oak trees with a Bronze Axe or better.
- 20x Black Metal: smelted from Black Metal Scrap in a Blast Furnace.
- 5x Linen Thread: spun from Flax at a Spinning Wheel.

When to Use It
This is mid game gear. Black Metal drops from Fulings in the Plains, well past Moder.
Upgrades
The sword can be upgraded 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station built one step higher than the last. Every figure quoted elsewhere on this page is quality 1, so here is the full upgrade ladder your own copy sits somewhere on:

Properties
It deals 95 slash, the most slash damage you can get out of a Forge, and it is the last sword before the Black Forge tier. It needs the Forge fully built up: level 4 at quality 1.
With slash alone and no element, it falls behind against the undead. A Silver Sword hits for 20 less slash and still beats it against Draugr and Skeletons, because its 30 spirit damage lands where slash is only ever ordinary. Against everything else in the Plains, this is the better sword.
Notes
- With a Shield equipped, blocks use the shield's block armor, block force and parry bonus instead of the sword's.
- The primary attack is a three-hit combo whose third hit deals double damage, and every enemy caught in a swing takes the full damage.
- The secondary attack deals triple damage with slightly longer reach, but costs twice the stamina.
