The mages hold the camp, and the Dvergr Rogue walks the ground around it. It wears goggles and a hood and carries a crossbow that puts a hundred and ten pierce damage through you at fifteen metres. It patrols the Mistlands by daylight and walks right past you as long as you leave its kin and its buildings alone. Start something and you are fighting the whole settlement, not one dwarf.

Behaviour

Rogues are neutral until provoked, and the triggers are the same as for every dwarf. Hurt this one, hurt another nearby or damage a structure they protect, and the whole faction turns on you for the rest of the game. Left alone, they wander singly or in pairs through the mist with a lantern swinging. They are hostile to the biome's natives and attack seekers, gjall and ticks on sight, so following one at a polite distance is an effective way to clear ground. In a fight it wants range. It braces one leg, loads and fires a bolt for 110 pierce every six seconds. The bolt flies fast enough that travel time barely helps you, and only a small spread saves you at distance. Get within a couple of metres and it swings the side of the crossbow like a club for 70 blunt in a wide arc, which is a big step down for it. It does not flee, it coordinates with any other dwarves in earshot, and a healing mage back at the camp will keep it standing if you leave her alive.

Where to Find It

Rogues are the wandering half of the dwarven population. They spawn uncommonly anywhere in the open Mistlands during the day, with only a couple active at once, and they also have permanent spawn points at the dwarven forts and camps. That is the important difference from the mages, which are fixed to their structures and never come back once killed. Rogues respawn, so clearing them is temporary, and a route you walked yesterday may have a new one standing on it today. One and two star versions turn up, and at the top end they have a thousand health and bolts well over two hundred damage. All of this sits behind Moder and a wisplight, and in thick mist you will often hear the crossbow being cranked before you see the lantern.

Strengths and Weaknesses

A rogue has no weakness to any damage type, so bring whichever weapon you hit hardest with instead of a themed one. It hardly staggers, so plan on trading hits properly instead of stun-locking it. The bolt is a projectile: a shield blocks it outright, and strafing behind a block of black marble or rock makes it miss entirely. Its melee bash does barely more than half the damage of its shot, so closing the gap is almost always correct. A Mistwalker or any solid melee weapon with carapace armour makes the exchange safe. At a lower tier, the pierce resistance of a root harnesk takes a worrying amount off each bolt. Above all, count the camp before you swing at anything. Provoking one rogue provokes the mages behind it, and a supported rogue heals faster than an unprepared player can chew through a thousand health.

Drops

It drops coins, black marble and soft tissue, and the trophy drops about once in twenty kills.

Level Variants

A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately when it spawns, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred Dvergr Rogue is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.
