With just fifty health, the Tick is one of the flimsiest things alive in the Mistlands, and that is exactly why it kills people. It does not trade blows. It closes in, fastens onto you and drains 50 pierce every half second for five seconds straight, which is enough to empty a fully fed Viking who spends those seconds swinging at fog. Most first encounters come three at a time, spat out of a passing Gjall you were busy looking up at.

Behaviour

It scurries low and fast over the moss, closes in a straight line and then leaps to attach itself. That attachment is its whole moveset. Once it is fixed on, it drains 50 pierce every half second for five seconds, ten separate hits, and the 1-star and 2-star versions raise that to 75 and 100 a hit. The lunge only reaches a metre in a narrow arc in front of it, so all of the danger lies in letting it arrive. It fights only up close, never calls for help and never flees at low health, so it is a pure closer that either reaches you or dies trying. Its hitbox is comically small for the size of the model. Wide swings sail clean over it, and it can end up latched to your back while your weapon keeps finding nothing. The same quirk cuts the other way: a tick that attaches while you are already walking away sometimes fails to land a single drain. A parry breaks its grip instantly. Ticks come in numbers rather than proper packs. A Gjall vents three at once and can have eight out around it, and the mine spawn points sit in clusters, so the fight is almost always several small problems at once rather than one big one.

Where to Find It

Ticks spawn only in the Mistlands, and the dependable place to farm them is underground. Infested Mines hold two kinds of spawn point: a common one that fires once, and a less common one that refills roughly every four hours. Both can produce starred ticks. Above ground, ticks cluster at the Giant Remains, five to a site wherever the bones are dressed with skulls, and these are always unstarred and spawn only once. Free-roaming ticks unlock late. They only start appearing across the biome at night after the Queen is dead, no more than three at a time, and they despawn at dawn, so they are rated very rare and behave like it. Before then, the other way to meet a starred one is the "What's up, Gjall?!" raid, which switches on after Yagluth falls and switches off again the moment the Queen does. Every Gjall in the biome is also a tick dispenser, three per belch, and that is where most players meet their first one.

Where and When At Once How Often Stars

Uncommon spawn point in the Infested Mines - Respawns every 4 hours Yes
Spawned by Gjalls (3 per ability) 8 Very common No
During "What's up, Gjall?!" event before defeating The Queen 4 Very common Yes

Strengths and Weaknesses

Pierce is the answer, and it is not subtle. A bow, a spear or anything with a point kills a tick in a hit or two, and Needle Arrows are overkill. The hard part is connecting. The model is small, low and quick, so heavy overhead swings and two-handed sweeps whiff over it far more often than they land, while a knife, a spear or a one-handed sword does much better work at close range. Leave silver and Frostner out of it: the spirit part of their damage is wasted here, and the blunt and frost halves do all the lifting anyway. If one does get onto you, parry instead of panic-swinging. A clean parry strips it off on the spot, and an Iron Buckler turns the whole encounter into a non-event. Better still, never let them arrive: shoot them out of the air as a Gjall drops them, and keep your back to a wall in the mines so nothing attaches behind you. Any Mistlands-tier gear handles the damage comfortably, and even Black Metal from the Plains is enough, as long as you can actually see them coming. In practice that means carrying a Wisplight.

  • Pierce deals extra damage to it.
  • Spirit damage does nothing to it.

Drops

Every kill drops a Blood Clot, the Mistlands reagent behind the Staff of Protection, and the trophy drops about one time in twenty.

Level Variants

A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately at spawn, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred tick is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.
