Crack open one of the pale eggs in an Infested Mine and you will most likely get a Seeker Brood: a juvenile seeker, softer and yellower than the adult, about knee height, with the same pincers. With twenty health it dies to almost anything you swing. It still deals sixty pierce damage, though, so if you let six of them surround you in a mine corridor, their low health stops mattering very quickly.
Behaviour
Broods are small, quick and come in numbers. They scuttle rather than fly, swarming towards anything hostile in a loose mob and getting underfoot exactly where you need room to swing. They have one attack, used over and over: the brood leans back, then sweeps its pincers down to clamp whatever is in front of it. The arc is barely a metre and a half long and comes back every three seconds. They do not flee and cannot call for help, but they seldom need to, since whatever spawned one usually spawned several. They stagger at a very light threshold, and that is the saving grace of the whole encounter: one wide swing knocks a cluster off balance at once and buys you time to clear the rest. In an infested mine they are almost always the second problem, spilling out of a broken egg while a full grown Seeker is already coming down the passage behind you.
Where to Find It
Broods belong to the Infested Mines of the Mistlands, and you usually meet one by breaking a seeker egg, which spawns a brood about three times in four. They cannot have stars, so every brood is exactly as strong as the last. Before the Queen is dead there is also an event, They sought you out, which sends them at you in large numbers and is very common while it runs. After she dies, a few can spawn on their own at night anywhere in the Mistlands, though this is rare, and they clear at dawn like the adults. Nothing else spawns them, and they never appear outside the Mistlands.
| Where and When | At Once | How Often | Stars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anywhere in Mistlands at night after defeating The Queen, despawn at dawn | 5 | Very rare | No |
| 75% chance when destroying Seeker eggs found in Infested Mines | - | One time | No |
| During "They sought you out." event before defeating The Queen | 8 | Very common | No |
Strengths and Weaknesses
Twenty health is not a fight, it is a chore, and all the danger is in the head count. Broods shrug off half of everything physical just like a full grown Seeker, but against twenty health that barely registers, and almost any weapon kills one in a swing or two. What matters is area. An atgeir sweep, a two-handed sword, a wide axe swing, anything that catches three at once clears a nest far faster than a one-handed weapon behind a shield. Because they stagger easily, that same wide swing knocks the group down and lets you finish them without taking a hit. Do not fight them in a doorway, where they pile onto you from one direction and leave you no room to swing, and do not break eggs while something larger is already on its way. When you can, break eggs on purpose, one at a time, with a wall behind you and open floor in front. Any Mistlands gear makes them trivial and Black Metal is more than enough, but a bad position at any tier will get you clamped from three sides at once.
Drops
Broods drop Royal Jelly about half the time, which is the whole reason anyone goes looking for eggs to break.
