You hear it long before you see it: a droning blare somewhere between a klaxon and a low-flying aeroplane, while the fog around you turns a sick orange. The Gjall is a glowing, bloated flying sack the size of a house, and it is the single most common reason a first trip into the Mistlands ends in a corpse run up a cliff. It never has to reach you to kill you, and that is exactly what catches people out.
Behaviour
A Gjall drifts above head height, slow and tireless, and opens fire the moment it has a line on you. Its main attack is a pair of lobbed fireballs dealing 50 blunt and 80 fire each. They fly flat and fast enough that dodging them means reading the arc rather than reacting to the impact, and the splash sets the ground burning. It also drops clutches of three eggs roughly every fifty seconds, which hatch almost at once into Ticks. The Ticks are always unstarred, whatever the parent's tier, but a fight you are slowly winning can still bury you under a swarm of them. Get within six metres and it switches to a shake, a close-range shudder that hits three times for 20 blunt and cannot be blocked or dodged. Standing on top of it shuts off the spit and the egg drop entirely. It never flees, cannot summon more of its kind, and does not patrol so much as hang over the terrain waiting for movement. You, however, can leave: a Gjall is slow enough to outrun on a full stamina bar, and running is often the right call.
Where to Find It
Gjalls live in the deep interior of the Mistlands, not on its shoreline, and a player who only skirts the edges of the biome may never meet one. They spawn in the middle of the landmass by day as very rare unstarred wanderers, and again by night, when starred versions become possible; the night spawns clear at dawn. Distance inland matters more than the ground beneath them, since they float over rock spires, root tangles and Dvergr outposts without caring, although the broken vertical terrain at least gives you somewhere to break line of sight. They also come in the raid event announced by a shout about Gjalls. It is available before The Queen is defeated and sends a very common wave of unstarred Gjalls at your base, and this is how most players farm them without going looking. Nothing else gates them, so the only real requirement is surviving the walk into the middle of a Mistlands.
| Where and When | At Once | How Often | Stars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Middle of the Mistlands during the daytime | 1 | Very rare | No |
| Middle of the Mistlands during the nighttime, despawn at dawn | 1 | Very rare | Yes |
| During "What's up, Gjall!?" event before defeating The Queen | 1 | Very common | No |
Strengths and Weaknesses
This is a bow fight, and treating it as anything else goes badly: a Gjall usually floats above melee reach, and the only melee it offers back is a shake you cannot block or dodge. Aim for the orange sacs on its underside, which take double pierce damage. An Arbalest with heavy bolts, or a Spine Snap loaded with Needle Arrows, will drop it in a fraction of the shots that body hits need, and focused fire on the sacs staggers it and interrupts the egg drops before the Ticks stack up. Fire is the one thing not worth packing, since it lands for half. Drink Fire Resistance Barley Wine before you start and the fireballs go from lethal to merely expensive; without it, two clean hits will finish a player in fresh Mistlands armour. Find high ground for a flat shooting line, keep a rock or a ridge at your back to duck behind between volleys, and kill each Tick as it lands rather than letting a pile of them latch on while you are trying to aim.
Drops
The Bilebag is the real prize, since it is the only way to get Jotun Bane and Bile Bombs, and the trophy drops about one kill in three.

Level Variants
A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately when it spawns, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference is not only in the numbers: a starred Gjall is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.
| Level | Stars | Image | Health | Damage | Drops |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | - | 1500 | 100% | x1 | |
| 2 | ⭐ | 3000 | 150% | x2 | |
| 3 | ⭐⭐ | 4500 | 200% | x4 |
Notes
- Gjall are very dangerous but easy to outrun, so fleeing is an option if you have enough stamina.
- Pierce resistance helps against the Ticks if they become a problem.
