The Seeker is what the Mistlands is really about. It is a chitin-plated insect roughly the size of a horse that comes out of the fog with a noise you will learn to dread, lands on you and opens with a single claw sweep for 120 damage. It shrugs off half of every physical weapon you carried through four biomes, and for most players it is the wall that ends their first three or four attempts at the biome.

Behaviour

Seekers hunt properly. From anywhere between ten and a hundred metres away they launch off the ground and fly, crossing the broken ridges and chasms that would slow anything else down. Once within about five metres they drop back to the ground and finish the job on foot. Up close they use a short set of very heavy attacks: a pincer snap through a tight arc for 90 pierce, a wider claw sweep for 120, and a ground slam for 100 blunt. They can also throw that slam down from the air as they land, which is how players get caught while already retreating. They do not flee and do not call for help in any scripted sense, but they are rarely alone. In a biome where you can see fifteen metres at best, the effect is the same: the second one arrives while you are busy with the first. Once aggravated, a seeker will follow you across an entire ridge. Seekers also fight the Dvergr, so backing one into a Dvergr outpost gets you a great deal of help.

Where to Find It

Seekers hold the middle of the Mistlands, the high rocky interior rather than the coastal fringe, and they are common there at every hour. Daylight is the kinder half: by day only two are about at once and none carries more than one star. After dark the cap rises to six and two-star seekers start to spawn, which makes it feel like a different biome; those night spawns clear at dawn. Seekers also cluster in and around Infested Mines, where they respawn on a timer of a few hours and the fight happens in corridors instead of open ground. The Queen summons them during her own fight, in numbers scaled to the size of the party. Once she is dead, a very rare unstarred seeker can spawn at night in the Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp or Plains, which is an unpleasant thing to leave wandering around anyone still building there.

Where and When At Once How Often Stars
Middle of the Mistlands during the daytime 2 Common Yes (max 1 star)
Middle of the Mistlands during the nighttime, despawn at dawn 6 Common Yes
Anywhere in the Meadows, Black Forests, Swamp, Mountains or Plains during the nighttime after defeating The Queen, despawn at dawn 2 Very rare No
Spawn points near some Mistlands structures - One time Yes
Spawn points in Infested Mines - Some respawn every 4 hours Yes
Spawned by The Queen (amount based on nearby players) 2-5 Very common No
During "They sought you out" event before defeating The Queen 3 Very common No

Strengths and Weaknesses

None of your weapons deal extra damage to a seeker, but half of everything physical bounces off its carapace, so the swap worth making is from raw weapon damage to the elements. Fire, frost and lightning all land at full weight, which makes a Staff of Embers, a frost weapon or anything with lightning damage worth far more than its damage number suggests. Seeker attacks are almost all pierce, so a Root Harnesk brought up from the Swamp cuts the damage you take by a large margin. It is worth wearing over armour with better numbers until you have carapace armour of your own. Parrying is the best melee answer, since the attacks are slow and heavily telegraphed and a staggered seeker is a free window. The blows hit hard enough, though, that an unupgraded buckler will simply break your guard. Above all, fight where you can see. Carry a wisplight and pick open ground, because what kills people is not the damage but the fog hiding the second seeker until it is already on top of them. A full Mistlands kit makes seekers routine; with Black Metal and silver you can do it carefully, one at a time, with a wall behind you.

  • It resists Blunt, Slash and Pierce damage.
  • It is immune to Spirit damage.

Drops

Carapace is the reason to hunt them, since the whole Mistlands armour and Black Forge tier is built on it. They also drop Seeker Meat for the Iron Cooking Station, and a trophy on roughly one kill in ten.

Level Variants

A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately at spawn, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference is not only in the numbers: a starred seeker is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.

Level Stars Image Health Damage Drops

2 ⭐ Seeker 400 150% x2
3 ⭐⭐ Seeker 600 200% x4

Notes

  • Seekers look like ants, but unlike ants, basic Seekers can fly, while Seeker Soldiers and The Queen cannot.
  • Seeker hives produce Royal Jelly. In real life, royal jelly is made by worker bees and fed to larvae, particularly to raise new queens.
