The Ride is the main job in which V and Jackie Welles meet the fixer Dexter DeShawn for the first time. It starts in Viktor's clinic in Little China, Watson, right after The Ripperdoc, and takes place in the back of Dex's limousine. Dex lays out the biggest job of their lives: stealing an experimental biochip from Arasaka.

Story

Gramsci Burgers

The journal quotes the first rule of the Afterlife, as Dex likes to put it: high risk, high reward. This is the moment V and Jackie have been working for, a chance to grab the bull by the horns and make a name for themselves. First, though, they have to hear what Dex has to say.

After the new implants are fitted, V heads back up to Misty's Esoterica. Jackie has set up the meeting and says that Dex is waiting in his car near Gramsci Burgers, a short walk from the shop. Regina Jones calls on the way out to talk about the rising number of cyberpsycho attacks in the city.

In the Limousine

Dex's limousine drives around the city while he talks business. He opens by asking how V wants to be known in Night City, as a nobody or as a legend. Then he gets to the point. The job is to steal a prototype biochip that belongs to Arasaka, and Dex wants it done as cleanly as possible.

The plan has two parts. First, the crew needs a Militech bot called the Flathead, which the Maelstrom gang stole when they ambushed a Militech convoy. Meredith Stout, a Militech agent, could help V get it back from the gang, whose leader is Royce. Second, V should meet the client, Evelyn Parker, who knows the inside story. Dex hands V a shard with the details about Maelstrom.

What Comes Next

Dex drops V off at the Kabuki roundabout. Regina calls again, and then Jackie calls to hear how the meeting went. He asks whether V wants to deal with Maelstrom first or meet Evelyn first. The answer decides which main job comes next: The Pickup or The Information. Both have to be done before The Heist.

  1. Leave Viktor's clinic and go back up to Misty's Esoterica.
  2. Talk to Jackie, who tells V where to find Dex.
  3. Answer the call from Regina Jones.
  4. Leave the shop and walk or drive to Dex's car near Gramsci Burgers.

Meet with Dex

  1. Get into the back of the limousine.
  2. Answer Dex's question about how V wants to be known in the city.
  3. Ask why he wanted to meet in person, then ask about the job.
  4. Ask about Maelstrom and the client, and take the shard Dex offers.
  5. Ask about Meredith Stout and Royce for more details.
  6. Get out of the limousine at the Kabuki roundabout.

After the Meeting

  1. Answer the call from Regina Jones.
  2. Answer Jackie's call and tell him about the job.
  3. Choose whether to start with the client or with Maelstrom.

Choices

The only real choice comes at the end. Telling Jackie to start with the client starts The Information first. Telling him to start with Maelstrom starts The Pickup first. The other job still has to be done afterwards, and both lead to The Heist. The answers given to Dex in the limousine change his replies but not the job.

Rewards

Completing The Ride pays 1,516 experience and 167 Street Cred.

Tips

Leaving Viktor's clinic also starts the side job Psycho Killer, offered by the fixer Regina Jones. More clothes appear in the wardrobe of V's apartment after this job, following a text from Viktor.
